Update on Mom

Post by starfire »

Well, her pain is less except when they make her move. They had her in a chair for an hour this AM. Really wiped her out but I know she needs to move to get the use of her leg back. Yesterday we found out that her left foot may also be damaged. They sent her for xray on that today. Haven't heard the results yet. Have to get there early in the AM to catch the Doc. on rounds. I left about 7:30 tonight so hoping it would be easier to get up nice and early tomorrow morning. I did it this morning but sure didn't feel like getting up. HaHa

They plan to send her to rehab ASAP. I know it's necessary but I feel so bad for her. Someone going to be 87 this month just shouldn't have to go through so much but I know a lot of people do.

I am trying to just get through each day as it comes. I am hoping she will be able to do the rehab requirements. If she can't they will send her to a nursing home. I really don't want that.

Everything is just so uncertain right now.

Shirley, thats just so hard to deal with. My mom has fractured her hip twice. After the second fracture two years ago when she was 91, she just gave up. She just wouldn't put the effort into rehab. Part of it was the pain, but mostly she just didn't have the motivation anymore. My family tried to do what we could, but she would constantly say "I'm just too tired". Now she is pretty much in a wheelchair and had to move out of her own room into a shared hospital-type room in the "nursing home" part of the assisted living facility. Oddly enough, she seems content......... I just have to accept that her outlook is different than mine.

Hopefully your mom will be up to the rehab like my mom was the first time........

Shirley,
I'm keeping your Mom in my prayers. I wish her as speedy recovery as possible. So sorry that's she's going through this, your right at 87 y.o. it hardly seems fair. My Mom broke her hip falling in a parking lot 6 months ago. The first couple of months were tough, but she is doing great now. She didn't like the stay at the rehab hospital, but my brother and sisters and I made a schedule and visited often, not liking it there was all the motivation needed to work to get out of the place.

Dan,

Don't get me wrong, the photos of the flowers are beautiful, and well done, but that photo of the newest addition to the family, (at least, I'm assuming that's a recent photo of Cash), is absolutely awesome. Those eyes are so expressive, and they're looking right into the very depths of the viewer's soul. Pardon my French, but you, sir, are one hell of a photographer.

Shirley,

There's no doubt that this is extremely hard on your mother, but hopefully, the desire to stay out of a nursing home will be all the inspiration she needs, to help her to meet the rehab requirements.

Thanks for the update.

Love,
Tex

Tex,
Thats Cash alright, he's sending Shirley a little love in what is most certainly a difficult time. I am doing some catching up on the boards, I hope you are well. That little pup is as lovable as he looks, which causes me concern as to what kind of hunting dog he'll be.

Shirley,
The flowers are 1) California Buttercup 2) I don't know  3) I believe these are some sort of wild Morning Glory. Keep positive thoughts, I am sure Mom will persevere and do well in rehab with your encouragement and support.

I had a little medical emergency, 8 weeks ago, but I lucked out, and recovered without any complications. Since then, I've discovered that living without a colon is not near as tough as I thought it would be.

Cash appears to have grown a lot, in the 2 months since you last posted a photo of him.

Little medical emergency? I DON'T THINK SO. It was BIG, VERY BIG. Very scary. We all are so grateful to his doctors.

How is your Mom today? What did the x-ray show? I pray it was ok.

Shirley, glad Mom is out of bed a bit. That's a start! Hope she will do okay in the rehab. I would think it will take a little while for her to perk up, after the surgery. Hope they don't expect too much too fast! Good luck with the foot.

Dan, love the photos.

The photos are wonderful, and Cash is just adorable. Such a sweet picture and I love flowers so they were perfect. I love it when you post your photography.

Thanks to all for the encouragement about Mom and for the prayers for her.

She was sent to the rehab facility yesterday afternoon. I have a busy day today, but should start getting a little more rest tomorrow since visiting hours are somewhat restricted. 4pm - 8:30pm I think. I have to be there at 8 this morning though and do some errands afterward.

I believe she will try to work with them but not sure how much she'll be able to take before getting so discouraged that she gives up.

The xray of her foot didn't show anything broken. Also, she was able to move it a little yesterday. Today they will try to dress her (including shoes). Don't know how that's going to go.

Tell her that my Mom, age 93, did it all and she can also.
So happy her foot wasn't broken. I hope and pray she can make it through PT without giving up on it.

At my Mom's appointment yesterday, we found out that she has bad arthritis in her hip. She has to see another doctor. I assume she won't have to have the screws taken out.
