Will see what traveling and stress does to me

Post by wonderwoman »

I haven’t written in quite awhile but do read the new posts every day. I got the book Living Gluten Free for Dummies from the library and read it. Read a few things I didn’t know.

I have not had any D since the weekend of my big birthday party on March 6 and that I’m sure was due to the stress of 50 people coming to our house for my birthday.

I received word Thursday that my 56 year old niece in Wisconsin died from colon cancer and I am flying to Wisconsin on Monday and will return Friday. I have two daughters there and will divide my time between the two homes. I need to e-mail the older one and ask her to pick up chicken breasts, rice milk, rice cereal, and bananas for me. I don’t have a problem with meals here at home but things will be different there. I am taking brown rice along and plan to cook that when I get there just so I don’t get hungry and eat something I shouldn’t. I am also taking small amounts of a few other staples.

What concerns me somewhat is my sister died from colon cancer in 1992 and now one of my nieces dies from it also. I often wonder what the future holds for me. I have not made the followup appointment with the GI after the colonoscopy on February 8th because I am doing so well and don’t want to hear any more wrong information from him.

Wishing everyone a Happy Easter. :bunny:

Charlotte,

You should be able to get a copy of the endoscopy report from the records department of the hospital where the colonoscopy exam was done. The report will contain all the details of what was observed, during the exam. If you have trouble interpreting the "doctorspeak" language in the report, we can help you to interpret it.

If there were no polyps, or other suspicious indications, you shouldn't need to be concerned for at least a few years. (Typically, it takes polyps about 10 to 15 years to become cancerous). With a family history of colon cancer, a colonoscopy exam at least every 5 years is recommended, after the age of 40. However, since you have survived to your present age without any apparent personal colon cancer increased risk issues, it may not be necessary to have a colonoscopy exam every 5 years. In fact, some authorities suggest that after the age of 75, colonoscopy screening exams are no longer advisable, due to increased risk of procedural complications, (such as perforations, etc.). You might want to discuss that with your PCP.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I'm very sorry to hear your sad news.

Please don't forget to tell DD to make certain your chicken isn't injected with any of your intolerances. I use Sanderson Farms but have no idea where it's available.

Hi WW,
I have not made the followup appointment with the GI after the colonoscopy on February 8th because I am doing so well and don’t want to hear any more wrong information from him.
There has not been a relationship demonstrated between MC and colon cancer. For that reason, they do not generally recommend a decrease in the time intervals that are commonly observed, and held to, for colon cancer screening. Saying that, you family history may change that somewhat -- sorry but you need to talk about that with your GI doc.

The gluten free Brownie mix and Chocholate Chip cookie that are General Mills products are not so commonly found here in the greater Phoenix area. Might be more likely found in Wisconsin, depending on where you will be there. General Mills is a Minnesota company.

I've tried them both. (Yes they are pricey, but if you are not feeding a boy scout troupe ....)

I have not tried their G-F cake mixes, but there is a good sounding recipe for lemon cupcakes made with the G-F Lemon Cake mix on their web-site.

The G-F brownies were pronounced "fine" by the DH here. The G-F cookies he pronounced -- "odd, not my favorite". The cookies were a different texture than one is used to with say - the Toll House recipe. I though they were OK, but different, good to freeze and keep just for me. They will last longer that way!

Funerals are always sad times, :raincloud: but ALSO a time to remember all the good times. Enjoy those memories and the (limited) time with family.

Have a good trip.

Thanks Tex and Gayle for the good news regarding the relationship between MC and colon CA. I still haven’t requested all my lab reports beginning with last summer which I intend to do. I will make a big note now and post it on the cupboard for when I get back. I will be sure to get the one from the colonoscopy on Feb 8 . I had a colonoscopy done December 2008 and no polyps at that time and he didn’t mention polyps this last time. I paid group health insurance claims for the state of New York and New Jersey for 15 years so I do pretty well reading the reports but will check here if I need help.

One of my daughters lives way over on the other side of the city (65 Miles one way) and she has been buying Betty Crocker mixes there. I also want to check at another large chain here. I will also check when I am in Wisconsin as I will have a much lighter suitcase coming back.

This daughter made me a GF cake for my birthday and it was wonderful. She used the BC GF choc cake mix and a box of GF pudding mix. She sent me the recipe today and I will have to post it. I mentioned to her today that I took the last piece of it out of the freezer and I’m having it today while everyone else eats regular brownies. Her husband is gluten intolerant since November. Believe me, this cake was delicious.

I will post it in the DEE’s recipe section right now.
