That's the closest I've heard yet and we do have those here, but it sounds exactly like the chirp I first described, and I thought for the longest time that it was my neighbors smoke alarm battery warning. I've googled this and apparently this is something others have described also, but nobody so far has id'd the actual bird.
We have a stuffed California Quail in a glass case in our LR that my husband found at a garage sale, pretty sure it's not him.
