Enterolab not available in my state
Hello,
In 2009 I read through the posts by believers and naysayers and I finally decided to order Enterolab testing. About a day after I had place my order, I received a phone call from EL telling me that they are not legally allowed to mail sample collecting kits to my state: New York.
Does anyone know why this is?
What is the way around it if I really want the test to get done? Whould I just visit someone's home in nearby Philly and stay there for about 2-weeks to get the whole process done? It's kind of something that I wanted to keep private. I am still relatively young, and I'm not sure how I would go about asking my friend if I can stay in his home in Philadelphia for the sole purpose of going "number 2".
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you for reading.

Wow, that is a puzzle. I can't imagine why they wouldn't be allowed to ship there. But then, I'm often amazed at decisions made by people in government.
I really don't know how else you'd be able to use Enterolab unless you did have the kit shipped to another state and (I suppose) mailed the sample from another state also. Do you live near enough to the state line to make that work?
Good Luck, Shirley

Hi Trymester,
As I understand it, the New York State Department of Health regulates such facilities as laboratories, and currently, New York State law requires that all laboratories testing human specimens must first obtain a permit in order to operate in the state. Furthermore, the law also states that labs can only provide tests at the request of a state-licensed physician, who is not employed or financially compensated by the company that will perform the test.
IOW, the medical lobby has convinced the state legislature to allow them to monopolize any and all medical testing of New York residents.
While it is illegal to ship a test kit into the state of New York, (to an unlicensed recipient), as far as I am aware, it's not illegal for anyone to ship a sample out. If anyone is aware of any reason why I am wrong, please don't hesitate to clarify this issue. One possibility is for you to contact Enterolab to see if they can provide a list of doctors in New York State, (near where you live), who would be willing to order the test for you. Alternatively, as Shirley suggested, I believe that an out-of-state friend could order the kit, you could personally pick it up from their residence, (or they could forward it to you), and then you could collect the sample, and send it, whenever you wish, from your own home.
This has come up before, of course. Please read at least the last post in this thread:

Dear Trymester
I think this is your first post so
to the PP family!!
Tex has given you the details on NY state and enterolab.
Good luck on getting the sample successfully to the lab.......where there is a will there is a way!!
All best, Ant
P.S. the IP flag looks Japanese, which would have been fun since I used to live there, but obviously you are from NY.

Hello all,
Thanks for the replies.
I am currently vacationing in Japan and won't be back in NYC until the 1st of June.
I will call and ask them if they can refer me to a doctor that would send for the test.
Or if that's even a possibility.
I may just have to wait until I visit another state and hopefully have enough money and time to get the whole process carried out at that moment.

Dear Trymester, Ogenki desu ka?
Until you know if you are or are not soy intolerant I would suggest (to be safe) you keep off any japanese food marinated in or containing Soy or MSG and keep off the tofu (also soy). Shabu-shabu and grilled meat and fish should be fine - again if not marinated in soy. Rice is fine and sake (rice wine) should be OK, but not beer, as it has gluten.
Hope you are enjoying Japan.

Trymester,
If a doctor orders the Enterolab tests for you, it's possible that your insurance may pay for the tests, (of course this is offset by the fact that you will have to pay the doctor for at least one office visit), and many/most insurance companies will not pay for stool tests, even if ordered by a doctor. It's worth checking into, though.
I hope you're enjoying your vacation, with a minimum of GI issues. That sounds like good advice on food choices, from Ant.

まま元気です Mama genki desu Some days are great, some days are awful. Last year I ran through the whole gamut of tests. Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Small Bowel test, HIDA Scan, Abdominal and Pelvic MRI w/ contrast, Gastric Emptying Scan, etc. The only thing that showed up was Gastroparesis (which I may or may not have according to different doctors opinions). I also blood tested positive for colits antibodies Sacchromyces Cerviase, but nothing ever came of it, and it wasn't really ever mentioned as an issue. I guess I want these Enterolab tests as another source of testing to quell my concerns.
