Speaking Of Birds Serving As Alarm Clocks

Post by tex »

A whippoorwill, right outside my window, woke me this morning. He or she apparently had the alarm set for the first signs of daylight.

HI Tex,

Cannot think of a better way to wake up and to such a wonderful call. Sure it might of not been your choice but much better than the darn alarm clock.

Love, Maggie

Every afternoon a bird comes and pecks at the brass plate at the bottom of our front door. This has never happened before in all of the years we have lived here... Not sure what time frame he is working on.. just mid afternoon sometime:)

Maggie,

Agreed. We don't hear whippoorwills very often around here, so it was kind of a pleasant surprise.

GrannyH,

It sounds as though he or she might be trying to establish the pecking order with his or her reflection.

Is it a cardinal? They're pretty bad about fighting their reflection in windows, vehicle mirrors, etc.

I thought our pesky little pest was a Cardinal at first but it was a Summer Tanager. Haven't seen or heard him so far, thank heavens.

Nothing I love more than my bird alarm clocks this time of year. I quite often wake up early and just listen in that stage between awake and asleep

First off is the joyful spring chirping of the robins. They seem to start far away and then as it becomes lighter it comes closer and closer. So relaxing when between sleep and awake. The sound makes me feel that they are joyful to start a new day.

Then the quarrel of sparrows starts in my neighbors lilac bush. Such frenetic happy energy as they make mad dashes between the bushes.

For years I have had two morning doves that sit on my roof at sunrise and do their mournful ooah,coo,coo...coo,coo. The most wonderful way to wake up. Sorry it is hard to render their song in type. I would miss them horribly if they went away, it’s so relaxing.

Well any ways... I would not miss it for anything and its far better than a dog barking a car alarm or a fire engine blasting down the street or a maddeningly buzzing alarm clock . Just a so pleasant way to ease into the day.

Enjoy

Love

This evening I looked up as I was walking back to the house from our barn and there was a Great Blue Heron, or some kind of crane, flying way up high above me heading over toward our local bird sanctuary. I have never seen one flying so high! They are usually on the ground or in the water, and just pass through here on their way up north for the summer, I think. It was very magical...

I agree, Linda. There was always a Great Blue Heron hanging around our creek in Pa. Used to fly (but not real high) a couple times a day. I sure miss it.

Angy, Thanks for posting the video. Our cockatiel used to do the same thing.
