Hello Geargirl!

Post by Linda in BC »

Hello Geargirl, one newbie to another! :newbie:

You are well on your way to feeling better, I'd would say, just by virtue of having found this site and these oh, so wonderful, helpful people, and by your obvious willingness to do what is neccessary.
I just wanted to say that any time I have tried probiotics the results have been disastrous for me. But then, I have not tried the kind your Dr. recommended. I agree.... one thing at a time.. maybe I will get that kind when I have stabilized a bit. It may be my imagination, but I have been GF more or less for two days now and already think I see an improvement.

BTW, has anyone used enzymes? A GF friend of mine was telling me about them today. She uses them when she is eating out and thinks she may inadvertently consume hidden gluten. They aid digestion apparently...

I will be away on a trip to Vancouver until Sunday and offline. My most dreaded time... eating out, strange places ( where is the bathroom?? !) Thank goodness for Pepto Bismul and Immodium. Wish me luck!

Linda,

A newbie, (Traveler), posted to a thread written by Geargirl about a year and a half ago, (why such an old thread was selected, I have no idea, but that happens, now and then, when newbies search the archives). Then several other members responded, (assuming that it was a new thread). Geargirl hasn't logged on in over 8 months, and hopefully, the reason is because she has been in remission all this time.

I tried enzymes one time while I was going through the healing process. I was doing OK, but I thought I would do better with enzymes, since they're advertised to be so beneficial for anyone with digestive system issues. I took a minimum dose, (only one capsule), just before breakfast, intending to do the same for each meal, and if they helped, then I planned to increase the dose, the next day. In about an hour and a half, I could see that I had made a bad mistake, because I felt like hell. About a half hour later, I started vomiting - lots of ugly, green colored stuff. I felt better after that, but the improvement didn't even last for an hour before I started feeling bad, again. After another hour, I was vomiting again. About every two hours, the cycle repeated, except that after the second episode, there was nothing left to regurgitate, so I had to be satisfied with the dry heaves. Mercifully, by the end of the day, I finally stopped vomiting, (or rather, trying to vomit), but I still felt rough, and by then, of course, I was having D. I didn't eat anything that day, but the second day, I finally ate a little chicken soup, and managed to keep it down. I felt a little better by the third day, and was able to eat a little solid food, later in the day. By the fourth day, I was feeling much better, and I was almost back to normal. Needless to say, that satisfied my curiosity about enzymes, and I haven't touched them since.

The worst part was, I paid almost 50 bucks for that bottle of super-duper enzymes, and I only used one. Of course, I consider myself extremely lucky - if I had taken 2 or 3, they might have killed me.

OMGosh Tex!! thank you so much for telling me that (ouch! painful) story ..And possibly saving me from going through the same hellish experience! That is kind of like what happened to me with the probiotics, albeit my reaction was far less serious and of a much shorter duration.

Ya.. it's all fun and games (these DIY nutritional fixes,) until someone (with MC) gets...(insert your choice..... non-stop D, vomiting, huge pains in stomach, etc) hurt!

Well, scratch the welcome to Gear girl  And here I was all excited cause I actually got to welcome someone! I hope she is doing fine.

Have a good weekend everyone and I'll catch up with the (no doubt) many posts on Sunday. and .. thanks again...
:ciao:

i have not had success with pro-biotic or digestive enzyme tablets. I used them for IBS (with mixed results funny enough i think as it became more MC and not IBS was when they werent as effective)

given the feedback from others on this site and how my body reacted to the probiotics, after discussion with my acupuncturist and naturopath we are trying sub lingual delivery. Lyn mentioned yesterday about B12 that you absorb under your tongue, i got some last night so far so good.
we are further researching other products that i can absorb sub lingual so that we remove any part of the digestion process from nutrient absorbtion even to the extent of small amounts of liquid herbs under my tongue rather than me swalling 5ml. we are looking at droplets under the tongue and if they will be absorbed and effective based on metabolism etc

Ant: Re: welcoming Traveller.. (I think that is what you were suggesting). Traveller came on about the same time as I did and I would feel funny welcoming him :-) It's Okay. I will just wait until the next newbie joins and I will give them a great big Potty People welcome!

Gabes:
I had just heard about sublingual ways of taking vitamins last week too, here and also from a friend. PLease let me know how taking the probiotics that way works for you. I checked out the sublingual Vit B at the Health food store yesterday. I am going to wait until I get the results of all the blood tests I had done today (incuding B12 level) and from that see what I need to start taking. What I was really interested to know was if they made sublingual Calcium. They have liquid Calcium I know but it is very expensive here. I could not find sublingual calcium and the girl at the store said all they had in that form was B12. I am quite worried about my calcium levels because I get these wicked leg cramps everytime I back off taking calcium, even for just one night. I meant to ask to have my potassium level and electrolytes checked too as Tex said that lack of those can also cause leg cramps, but I forgot.
Gosh it is just so nice to have people to talk to about this stuff .. but I really should go to bed! :bedtime:

probiotics

Post by Linda in BC »

Gabes, I just thought of something as I was brushing my teeth. You don't want probiotics in your bloodstream... they are a type of bacteria and are supposed to be in your gut to help with digestion. I don't think sublingual is the way to go with them.. just a thought :-)

given how probiotics works and metabolise i dont believe you can get the effectiveness unless they can be absorbed via the digestion tract given that probiotic is the good bacteria and by increasing the number of them in the digestion process gives them power over the bad bacteria. they are not blood stream types

the products we are looking at are not necesarily sub lingual products. we are researching does the body absorb the ingredients via the mouth, and get the benefit from the nutrients, there is a bit of science involved. these are not off the shelf type products, these are the high dose pure liquids, that naturopath or accupuncturist dispenses.

my friend who is the naturopath used to work for a company and her role was developing products. She is talking to her current employer (raw ingredient for vitamins etc distributor) about the marketability of sub lingual products so this is a bit of a dabble for her to see if a) it will work and b) investigate marketability.

sleep well - and yes.... it is like the biggest wamest hug to have these chats. remove the isolation, remove the doubts and fears, get as many hints as we can. we are being project managers and risk managers, you cant do roles that like alone.
