talked to family doc about crestor

Post by grannyh »

Since this was discussed in another thread.. and I said I would question him about it.. here goes.. but it will be totally non technical:)

It seems that statins work in different ways.. lipitor one way and crestor in another. He had a patient who was becoming confused... was it something like alzheimers or something else??? It seems lipitor can cross the blood brain barrier (non technical explanation mine) and can cause patients to become confused.. it is rare but it can happen. He took the patient off lipitor and sure enough confusion went away. He then put the patient on crestor.. no problems.

He said the reason for crestor is three fold... heart attack, stroke, alzheimers. I really can't even try to explain what he told me but I did understand what he meant.

I told him about the studies on cholesterol and age.. that the older we get the less high cholesterol means. He agreed.. since risk is one thing that goes up with age for lots of nasty things that go wrong with your body. However, your risk can also go up with other family factors. I have several of the other family factors which do increase my risks.

He had me set up to have blood tests every six months to check for any problems with my liver. I asked if liver problems could come sooner than six months. He said if I was concerned I could be tested every three months and yes medicare should pay for testing every three months instead of six.

I will continue taking small dosages of crestor... for now:)

Works for me. It sounds as though your doc has his head on straight, and he pays attention to your individual needs, as a patient. Good for him, and good for you, for asking the "hard" questions.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I told the family doc I was questioning about crestor BECAUSE of the thread on this forum and how thorough Tex is on researching stuff for us. He said we are very lucky to have someone so dedicated on our behalf!
