New DNA Kits going on sale OTC @ Walgreen's this week

Post by Stanz »

Don't seem to represent a savings over the cost of the kits from Enterolab if you order them from Pathway Genomics, unless I'm reading things wrong. I do find it interesting that there is now at least one other source available, maybe there are many more, just haven't seen them anywhere.

http://www.pathway.com/

This article says Walgreens is offering the kits for $20-30: http://www.katu.com/news/93530924.html
And this article explains more: http://www.news-medical.net/news/201005 ... reens.aspx

The kits, themselves, are cheap but getting the results is more costly.......

Hi Joan,

I just posted another link above, but I'll post it again here: http://www.news-medical.net/news/201005 ... reens.aspx

I don't remember right off what I paid for my tests from Enterolab, but it's interesting to research, as if you Google Pathway Genomics there is quite a bit of stuff about this. I'm supposed to be prepping now, so I gotta go, but anyone who has time to analyze this would be appreciated, just in case this could represent a savings. If I recall the tests from Enterolab were cheaper if all you get is the saliva test.

Well, this research just gets more interesting.

I wish I had the time to fully digest the ramifications of this: http://www.genomeweb.com/blog/exagen-de ... ion-dx-use

Joan,

Now I'm hooked and really need to get shopping!

It would appear from blogs I've read from googling this company, that this is similar to what Enterolab does but they seem to charge more and they also charge for time spent "discussing" the results with you. I think I saw where someone was charged $50 for a half hour.

I guess my take on this, and there are actually a few more genetic test kits out there now, is that this Lab has found a way to market it mainstream, in spite of the fact that this test is not FDA approved, and they have added on fees that you get sucked into. Not what I'd hoped.

From the link that Joan posted:
The National Society of Genetic Counselors warned in a statement Tuesday that receiving genetic information directly from a manufacturer without input from a doctor "increases the chance for misunderstanding or misinterpretation of results."
Isn't it great the way that all these medically-affiliated organizations that were formed to protect consumers from themselves, (read that - to force consumers to pay a doctor to do their thinking for them), always defend their objections to direct lab tests by accusing consumers of ignorance and/or stupidity.

Connie, I think you're right. Looking at the "reports" that are available on the company's website, I don't see anything that sounds as though it might actually contain a customer's genetic information. It sounds as though they are just selling "interpretations" of the genetic results, but maybe the actual results are included somewhere.

Those "IBD" tests offered by Exagen Diagnostics seem rather expensive, in view of the fact that they are not definitive tests. They sound good, but they really don't prove anything. A patient will still have to go through all the conventional tests, in order to get a definitive diagnosis.

Enterolab charges roughly 150 bucks for their gene test. Remember - they don't actually do those tests in-house. The tests are done by the Red Cross.

Yes, but those IBD tests by Exagen are being used by hospitals and are being paid for by Insurance providers and Medicare. in spite of the fact that there is no mention of dietary problems as a source of problems anywhere I've seen in relation to articles on Exagen tests. I had no idea any of this was even going on and it seems like this is just exploding recently if you search for articles posted in just the past month. Clearly these companies have found a cash cow and I've no doubt that if I researched long enough, I'd find a connection between Exagen and Mayo Clinic - (which I hate because they seem to do everything they can to discount the gluten/IBD spectrum connection.)

I know I seem to always have my tin foil hat on, but honestly, this looks more like a vast conspiracy to keep us all sick all the time. How a company like Monsanto hasn't been sued into oblivion and everyone jailed, is beyond me.

This article will make you sick: http://salem-news.com/articles/may09201 ... uth-tk.php
It explains alot about the American Cancer Society and other Agencies of that type that solicit our money and do precious little to work to address the real causes of illness. Being someone who was environmentally poisoned and had to pay for my own chelation treatment because my insurance didn't recognize lead poisoning in adults, this just really ticks me off.

Connie,

I believe I can tell you why Monsanto has not been sued into oblivion.

The article in the Salem paper includes this line:
I'm not even mentioning something Monsanto is behind that may be the scariest thing of all; genetically modified patented food.
The way they are trying to establish a monopoly in the food industry, is by becoming the patent holder of numerous patents that will allow them to totally monopolize the sales of planting seed. They have already pretty well established that position in the corn and soybean seed market. The U. S. government allowed them to actually patent genes, and so no one else can even enter the market, let alone compete with them. How can anyone be allowed to patent genes? That's crazy. But they're getting away with it. Many farmers have spent every dollar that they could possibly rake up, trying to challenge Monsanto's position on this, in the courts, but so far, Monsanto has busted every one of them. Everyone runs out of money, and has to give up. Except Monsanto - they never run out of money, and they never will, at this rate.

Roughly 25 or 30 years ago, (before Monsanto got into the seed business), corn planting seed cost roughly 25 to 30 dollars per bag, (50 pound bags, with enough seed to plant 4 or 5 acres of corn). Now, a bag of seed costs over $200, and corn seed is priced by the seed, (rather than by the bag), and each bag weighs much less than 50 pounds, (so it won't go as far). At this point, Monsanto still has a few competitors. If they successfully defend their patent ambitions, though, they will have virtually no competition, in the future. Imagine what seed will cost then. But more than that. Should the government allow a single company, (least of all Monsanto), to dictate what type of seed can be planted in this country? Talk about the death of biodiversity . . . As someone who has been involved in farming, for most of my life, that thought scares me to death. Monsanto is unbeatable, as long as the government, (the justice system), stands behind them, so it's no wonder that the American Cancer Society, (and every other organization that depends on contributions for it's survival), is forced to kiss Monsanto's butt.

That 10-year life span, (approximately), is probably a pretty close estimate. By then, most successful charities have grown enough to be in the "big business" category, and just like "big government", which passes out favors, in order to gain reelection, the charities find themselves in the position of having to kiss the right butts, in order to bring in the level of "contributions" they need, so that they can continue to lead the type of lifestyle that they have become accustomed to. :sigh:

P. S. Regarding your last link, several members have tried rifaxamin, (Wayne tried it at least twice), without any success. Maybe it works for IBS, (if IBS exists), but it doesn't appear to have a very good track record with MC, among the members of this board.

Tex,
Monsanto is not a new find for hatred for me. Monsanto nearly killed my sister with DDT in 1946 and completely destroyed the family farm in Minnesota. Have you seen Food, Inc.? If you haven't then it will make you sick if you do. We are being poisoned from so many angles I can't keep up with it. It wasn't bad enough that my Paternal GF was misdx with tuberculosis by the Mayo Clinic and my father dropped out of medical school in a panic to take over his Dad's work - FOR NO REASON - and it destroyed his life and made him a bitter and angry man. No, that wasn't enough, Monsanto came in and completely poisoned the entire county with DDT and destroyed their crops and farms and health. I could write a book on this.

My father passed this on to his children who had to listen to him constantly threaten suicide because he was so depressed and I remember this since I was a baby. To this day what I remember most about him is his big sigh. He would sigh all day because he was depressed and couldn't work while his children were literally starving.

I know this is a political topic, but the very fact that these bastards from Monsanto can tour around and check to see if people's crops are "their GMO grains" and then sue them because Monsantos GMO grain has infected their crops is just insane. Why there hasn't been a class action suit against these guys is beyond me. Why don't these farmers sue Monsanto for infecting their crops? Simple answer - Monsanto has the money and time, they are too big to fail.

Just like the oil companies in Alaska after the disaster in Valdez, they waited it out and then settled for nothing and this is exactly what BP, et al, will do now in the Gulf of Mexico. They will drag it out in litigation forever while the seafood industry in the gulf and all the people who have already been devastated by Katrina and were now only beginning to believe they could survive if only they had faith and believed and they just worked hard to do so, are further destroyed.

Trust me, I know A LOT about Monsanto and haven't talked about it here because that is my "other life" as a political maniac, which I have been since '68 when my fiance died in VietNam. We, no doubt, would clash politically, as I campaigned for Obama, I've met him, Michelle and his daughters. I've been silent on the comments on Healhcare legislation here, but definitely have my own opinions on that.

I have great daughters, a great husband, a beautiful home, savings and a challenging and enjoyable (for the most part) career. I have achieved the American dream, I guess, by working hard and not spending $ I didn't have. But, I mourn for the children who are starving all over the world because of the practices of US companies. I am uncomfortable with my "comfort", in spite of how hard I worked and saved and what I overcame to get here. I work as an advocate for abused women and children. I have worked all my life on children's causes and now only support causes that educate women on birth control and self worth in third world countries. I want justice and I know it won't ever happen for most people in my lifetime and daily I'm not sure that is enough. I have daughters, a husband and grandkids who depend on me. Sometimes that is more of a weight than anything else.

I also do not want to get political. But one thing I consider as a root of evil is MONOPOLY power of any sort. Patents are legalised monopolies. To quote the wise historian, Lord Acton: "all power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". If the first responsibility of Governments is safety of its people, the second should be to prevent monopolies from corrupting the social and economic basis of a civilized society.

More drug company related PR on genetic testing? As Dee pointed out here earlier, Walgreens has pulled the genetic testing kit and I really love the language that the FDA used in asking/telling Pathway to pull the kits: "But agency officials said Wednesday that Pathway crossed "sanctioned boundaries". Sanctioned boundaries-what are they if not the drug companies?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/elaine-sc ... 93485.html

So, I responded and I imagine you can tell who I am there if you read the comments, but what I really wanted to say is: "are you on a drug manufacturer's payroll?" Because other than that, why would she have even written this article?
