For all of us that have multiple issues.........eating out is very stressful as Polly stated! Even the boring stuff is not always perfect! I now tend to take 1 imodium before I go out which is rare! I bring my own food for peace of mind no matter where I go. It is worth it to me. I rather enjoy the company then worry about what I am putting in my mouth.
Ant, you are so right about how they look at you once you get past the gluten and start mentioning soy, dairy, corn etc.!! I had not tried the steroid comment yet, but will the next time.
My family is supportive, however, every so once in the while my hubby will question me on trying to eat something I can not. He obviously has not spent much time on the crapper!!
Joe, I agree with your comment on the Entocort does not prevent us from having problems; I cannot stray from the diet. Entocort keeps me functioning and I have no intention to stop taking it for quite awhile.
Keep the faith in our quest to tame this disease. Ginny

i got "contaminated" last night. not sure if it was gluten or yeast.
i took a small risk at dinner mostly due to tiredness and hunger and i am getting a bit sick of rice cakes and corn cakes. we were too tired to drive elsewhere so dinner at the dodgy hotel it was, i decided to have some fries with my fish, as i wanted something more than a piece of fish.
sure enough 15 mins later, reaction. The good thing was that with a dose of questran last night, and more zinc this morning the reaction has been contained.
no major issues today. I am pretty sure that the removal of dairy (caesin) from my diet for the past 2.5 weeks has definately helped. I have almost no bubbly butt or cramping. so maybe my body was able to cope

Gabes,
Food service French fries are usually soaked in a solution, (which contains gluten), to make them crisper, and to prevent them from becoming soggy as they cool down. This is done before they are frozen and shipped to the restaurant. Some restaurants make their own fries, of course, but most of them still use a "pre-soak", because they have learned how much "better" such a concoction can make their fries.
Even if they don't soak them in a gluten-containing solution, most restaurants fry their French fries in the same fryers that are used to cook onion rings, hushpuppies, etc., and so the potatoes become contaminated with gluten that is left in the oil by the "breading" on the onion rings, etc.
I hope that the effects won't last long. And yes, cutting out the casein should make your reaction to an accidental dose of gluten, a much less serious event.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Gabes,
Thanks for thinking of me. Just made some jello for tomorrow so that I could have the feel of something "solid" during the liquid cleanout. Am hoping I can get the Miralax down OK - I never drink large amounts any liquids quickly - I am more of a "nurser". Oh well, as you pointed out before, what's a day of diarrhea to an MCer, who knows what weeks/months/even years of diarrhea is like?
I'm going to take a half day off tomorrow so that I can get the prep done sooner. That way maybe I can get some uninterrupted sleep tomorrow night.
Are you home yet? Back to Gabes foods - yay! BTW, interesting about the full casein intolerance. I think that is more common with MC than just lactose intolerance. Casein was a "biggie" for me - I predict that you will see a major improvement within a few weeks of being off casein.
Love,
Polly

Afternoon All,
Ant you summed up exactly what I tell people - after 10 years of this it is not worth trying to explain to them.
So far as eating out, it is something that I and my DH just don't have an interest in. I love to cook and with as many intolerances as I have it is just easier. Sometimes is boring but try to adapt sauces, etc. to make it work. Frank could care less what I serve - kind of like Polly's husband - but is getting more interested since now being retired he is learning to cook dinners. He also for the most part is 100% GF except when he sees a soft pretzel his favorite.
Gabes - I totally understand why you won't be leaving your kitchen.
After vacation in September I won't be either.
Love, Maggie
