As If Traveling By Air Isn't Already Risky Enough

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Apparently the food service industry that serves the airlines, is an accident waiting to happen:

This could make it difficult to determine whether you were having an MC reaction, or were suffering from food poisoning. :sigh:

My husband is a pilot and he never eats the food. They have a rule that the pilot and first officer can't eat the same meal in case the food is bad and they get food poisining . . . . :puke:

This is interesting, I will be traveling to Australia in August, I'm going to bring plenty of my own goodies; it a good thing I can tolerate bananas.

I did know that about the pilots, it makes sense but does not engender trust in the food preparation services.

We flew Qantas to Australia about 5 years ago and they actually had decent food . . . don't know if it's still the same. Of course that was before I got sick and I still had my cast iron stomach.

What part of Australia are you visiting?

Mary Beth our travel office currently has me booked on Delta which will be going from Manchester to LA then to Sydney and finally to Brisbane. I will be staying in Sydney 2 days to visit with some friends and then Brisbane for 1 week. I have 1 day of giving a talk and moderating a discussion panel at a local university then the rest of the time is open.

This should be interesting after reading Gabes travel posts from France, at least they speak English in Oz, sort of... lol

After reading Gabes posts I plan on bringing my own food for the flight, fortunately I tolerate bananas quite well.

I'm glad I won't be eating the airline food...

I can't remember the food ever being anything to brag about but this is getting nasty. Maybe I should fly Qantas instead of Delta, although when leaving the US they are all are catered by the same companies.

I guess we haven't lost much by not being served food on domestic flights (in economy class) anymore.

out of 8 meals on 4 sectors of flights, only two of these 8 meals were edible within my MC guidelines

my first sector of travel (2 meals) there was no GF meal on the flight for me. the hosties did try to find me 'leftovers' one meal they gave me two rice cakes, the other meal i got a reject meal from someone in business class (it had been opened)

second sector of travel (2 meals) the options provided were very good (this was based on the catering supplied out of hong kong)
(mindful this was business class flight)

there were two sectors of 1.5 hours of internal travel in France, they only provide light refreshments and and biscuits

return trip
third sector of travel (2 meals) and again this was a business class sector. the meals were garbage, out of hunger and the fact that was sick of eating rice cakes and apple juice i did try to eat them. The second meal provided which was meant to be breakfast was frozen. they had three attempts at trying to get this meal to a temperature that was edible.

fourth sector of travel (2 meals) and yet again there was no special meal on board for me we suspect it has something to do with code share seat arrangement( my ticket was with air france but it was a qantas plane)

the head guy who also has intolerances did his best to try and find me something to eat. had i been able to eat salad or fruit there would have been no issue
he got me some steamed rice from business class and this was enough for me to settle my tummy and take some tablets

the issues with this was that i was unable to get food at transiting airports so to do 35 hours plus travel was not easy.

as mentioned in my international travel update, if i did this again i would definately take some GF cereal and rice milk

the other thing i noted in the international update was that when the meals are provided there is no labelling to tell you a) what the meal is and b) the ingredients so there is no way to know if there is any soy, yeast, dairy etc
