Pepto Bismol Question

Post by ant »

Hi,

I have just gone into a flare (hopefully short term :???: ). I think it was a drink of "100% pure coconut milk" - we shall see....maybe I have discovered my first additional intolerance at the reduced entocort rate of one every other day, which I have been on now since 22nd June.

I have just taken 4 pepto bismol pills to - hopefully - knock it on the head. But, I was wondering, since pepto "coats" the gut, does taking pepto interfere with absorption in the small intestine?

All best, Ant

Hi Ant,

Sorry to hear about the flare. I don't do well with coconut either. Also, Gloria and I (we share the same genes) cannot tolerate Pepto Bismol!

Don't think you need to worry about that.................does the label say anything about interfering with absorption? Anyway, it's just for a brief time, so I think you'll be fine.

Feel better ASAP!

Love,

Polly

Polly is right on the money, (not that there's any surprise there,, but I was thinking that it might interfere with absorption - silly me). From the Pepto FAQ page:
Should I take Pepto-Bismol with or without food?
Pepto-Bismol can be taken before or after meals, on either an empty or full stomach. There is no data to suggest Pepto-Bismol would interfere with the absorption of nutrients.

If it doesn't interfere with the absorption of nutrients, it shouldn't interfere with the absorption of budesonide, either.

Coconut milk is pretty rich stuff. Maybe it's a dosage thing.

Ant, it may be that the ingredients in your previously safe coconut milk were changed. That's what happened with the brand I had been using. It only had coconut milk and water, none of the "stabilizers", like guar gum, that are almost universally in all brands of coconut milk. I contacted the web site of my "safe" coconut milk and was told that the manufacturer in Thailand changed the recipe without notifying them, even though they were aware that it needed to be made to specifications. I wonder if something like that happened to your brand? I have read a number of stories on the web about how wide-spread food adulteration is.....honey and maple syrup are two major offender, not to mention milk in China. And trusting that what you actually get is what you think you are getting based on lists of ingredients can get pretty unnerving in this day of global economy and people taking shortcuts to increase profits........ That's another big advantage to preparing your own food from basic ingredients. I can no longer find a suitable brand of coconut milk in the area, and I've looked in a lot of stores. I really miss being able to use it, as it adds flavor and calories and variety.

Dear Tex, Joe, Rose, Gabes,

I seem a bit better today. I think I will know in a couple more days if the entocort reduction was premature.

I am hoping it was the coconut milk rather than the entocort reduction. It said 100% coconut but, as you said Rosie, that may have been untrue.

Also, it is the first time I drank a glass of the stuff (before I used it only as ingredients for cooking) and so, as Tex pointed out, it may have been too rich. I sort of sensed during the night before the morning D that some "bad" bacteria where have a good time down there with lots of lovely fat.

Thanks for your help and good wishes and hope you are doing OK,

Love Ant

Ant I'm glad you are feeling better and hope its just the new coconut milk being made a bit differently. Overall it never ceases to amaze me how fickle a disease this can be.

Best wishes Ant & I hope you continue to do better.

Dear Ant:

I hope you are feeling even better tomorrow and that it WAS just the coconut milk and not the reduction in Entocort. I had bought a can of coconut milk but have not tried it yet. Just went and checked the label and it is supposed to be pure. What kinds of dishes have you used it in while cooking? I had actually bought it just to mix with pineapple juice to drink.

Ant a couple of months ago I tried coconut milk a couple of times and I can't tolerate it either. I think I even wrote a topic about it. If guar gum is added, that could also be the cause. I avoid anything with guar gum, it gives me gas, bloating and restless bowels. Only in my case with the coconut milk I still don't know if it is actually the coconut milk or the additive, in the one I tried a version of potassium sulphite is added (a chemical preservative). If guar gum was added it should be listed on the label.

And I keep on wondering about the pepto bismul I (almost) can't get it here, not as an over the counter medicine and also (almost) not as an prescribed medicine. I have the impression in other places over the world it is common and easy to buy medicine. Strange that it is not available here.

Harma, the active ingredient in Pepto Bismol is Bismuth subsalicylate. Perhaps there is another more popular brand of antidiarrheal medicine with that in it sold in Holland...

Dear Linda, Harma and Joe

I continue to do better today, but am not out of the woods yet. One loose BM and very slight rumbling, but no D

I have been using Coconut Milk to flavour my "Thai style" risotto.

Harma, I also react to guar gum and try and make sure I get coconut milk without it. To be on the safe side, I think for the time being, I will use dried coconut for some flavour in my cooking.

Best wishes and hope you all feeling OK. Ant

woo hoo- glad to hear that things have improved... ie no D
and that you recovered quickly - from what Tex has said this is a good sign ie the inflamation has abated and our bodies recover from irritants pretty quickly.

Finding a way to inject a slightly different flavour into our reasonably bland diet is tricky

I had a win this week - went to a different organic health food type store, got Gluten Free balsomic vinegar and found white chocolate based on rice milk (not soy)! i was like a kid with a new toy. NEW Flavours, new treat

after my travels, i realise the range of products to suit multiple intollerances we have here in Australia is pretty good, so I will not complain!
