Polly, please don't hesitate to add any other inspirations that may have occurred to you since you originally wrote that post.
Thanks for the generous compliment, but we all know that you outrank me, and I'm so very proud that you are willing to even consider me a friend.
Love,
Tex

I had the situation this week at work (another morning tea where i had to watch people eat) and someone made the comment that they forget about my food limitations, they felt that it was because what i am dealing with is 'internal' and at work i dont complain, I am never vocal about the foods i cant eat, i put alot of work into my eating plan (and toilet plan) every day to ensure that my work schedule is not affected. ( it takes alot of energy somedays to attend these morning teas and be as calm as possible, my life is isolated enough without ditching these type of things)
they went on to say that if i was in a wheel chair or had visable symptoms it would be different.
at that moment i instantly thought of Polly's KISS post, namely the statement that chronic diarrehea is not a minor inconvenience and started giggling.
I was reminded that we all put alot of work into managing MC symptoms (and hiding them from the outside world).
The conversation ended with discussion that i assured them they dont want to see the symptoms and bad days.
Polly, you and many others in this family are absolute diamonds!

Very good post Gabes. I understand the "invisible Illness" issue. Today was our divisions off-site picnic. Everyone asked why I was not coming, I answered I cannot eat any of the food. At least 4 of them stated Oh I forgot. One did make the comment, maybe I should remind the planners of my dietary needs. I had sent an email about 3 weeks ago and the response was:
"We cannot accommodate your unique requirements at this time"
If I was in a wheelchair I'm sure there would have been parking and a ramp etc.. No such luck with MC

Joe,
Believe it or not, both MC and Crohn's disease qualify for special treatment under the Americans With Disabilities Act. That is to say, employers and organizers of public functions are required by law to make instant access to toilet facilities available to you, if you request it in advance. I'm not absolutely certain that the law applies to food, however, I suspect that it might, in a case such as that, since the law was passed with the goal of removing the hardship and the stigma connected with disabilities. An attorney specializing in civil rights should be able to shed some light on that question.
The bottom line is, many people still do not realize it, but a wheelchair is not necessary for a disability to fall under the guidelines of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Some of the key points of that law were clarified by congress, a couple of years ago, and inflammatory bowel disease clearly falls under the law.

Your right on the definitions for a disability, many 'invisible' conditions would apply. I would never pursue an issue like this, but it did highlight the issue of how these invisible illnesses are perceived. I will have to admit my perceptions have certainly changed over these past what is it almost 6 months now?
At least with everyone out at the picnic it gave me a quiet afternoon to try and catch up with some of the work stacking up from the trip.
