Say NO to genetically engineered salmon

Post by mbeezie »

The FDA is about to approve genetically modified salmon as the first "engineered animal" for human consumption! This is crazy! A real confidence breaker as they continue to undermine our health and safety. Please consider signing the petition.

MB,

I signed the petition immediately. This is a travesty, IMHO - messing with one of nature's perfect foods. I heard a debate about this on the radio today, and the potential consequences are frightening. The genetically altered salmon are far more aggressive than natural salmon. They could easily get loose and breed with natural salmon. Even if the U.S. monitors this, the company could sell these salmon to other countries like China, India, and we would have no say in how they are raised/marketed. As someone with so many intolerances and so few foods that are safe for me, I shudder to think about my future as more and more foods become genetically altered.

Obviously, there are major problems with the current food supply (witness the growing numbers with MC and other food-related diseases). And now we must worry about even more disasters.

Love,

Polly

Here's a little more information on that issue. Apparently if the FDA approves this project, the first fish would come from Panama.
If approval does go through, the first genetically modified salmon could begin entering U.S. supermarkets within about two years. Ronald Stotish, chief executive of AquaBounty, said the only fish farm initially eligible to produce the salmon for U.S. consumers would be his company's farm in Panama.
