LC and gallstones

Post by TLK »

:???: Hi, I'm new to the group. I have just been diagnosed with LC and seem to be in remission now. I believe that it is because of big diet changes and possibly less stress in my life. However, now I have been sent to a surgeon because I have gallstones and am having a lot of pain associated with that. The surgeon seems to think that my LC symptoms will come back. (bad, bad, bad diahrea) So he doesn't know whether to take it out or not. My GP says yes and my GI practitioner nurse says don't do it.
So three opinions and no answers, has anyone else had this problem?

:welcome:

I have LC and a gallstone. Regular doc wants it gone but surgeon says leave it alone if it's not bothering me.

I have heard that gallbladder removal can cause D.

Hi TLK,

Welcome to the group. Sorry to hear of your gallbladder problem, but gallbladder issues are quite common with MC. Statistics show that your surgeon and your GI nurse know what they are talking about. You may be interested in this old thread, which includes a poll:

Note Dee's post in that thread, (the second post in the thread).

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

Thank you for the welcome and advice  My surgeon is now sending me for a HIDA scan to see if I have a gallstone blocking any ducts. If so surgery is the only option. At this point I think I am going to have to do a trade off. Terrible abd pain and a risk of gallbladder rupture (it's quite swollen I'm told) which can be life threatening or D from LC and gallbladder removal. I think I pick D. I say that now because I'm not in the throws of it presently. I may regret it if and when it returns. However both issues are affecting my life dramatically and negatively. :headscratch:
It's nice to find a place where other people understand and support you

Welcome TLK,

There is no guarantee that the operation will cause the D to return, whereas it clearly is causing you pain now, and a risk of serious problems. Eating fat can be a cause of gallbladder pain, and also of D after surgery. I remember after I had mine done I would get D every time I ate anything fatty, but after about 9 months I suddenly found that had resolved itself.

I am trying to remember what the naturopath had me on as low fat - I think it was 35g a day, and I was counting fat grams like one counts calories - inlcuding the natural fat in meat, eggs etc. A bit hard to start with, but it worked, both before and after surgery.

Lyn has a very good point - many members of this board have had gallbladder surgery, and after a transition period, their bodies have learned to adjust to the change. As one who no longer has a colon, I can assure you that the body can make some amazing adjustments, in order to adapt to living without an organ that we thought was essential.

Good luck with the procedure, if you and your surgeon decide that you need to go forward with it. And please keep us updated.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and the info. I'm off for an HIDA test tomorrow to see if there is an obstruction caused by gallstones. The way I'm feeling I think they are bound to find something. If not I may have to be really proactive in getting this gallbladder removed. I think I can handle the post surgery D if it does come along.
I'll keep you posted.
