Hi Joe,

Somewhere recently I recall that you asked my advice about your vitamin D level. Unfortunately, I can't find the thread. I have had less time for the board lately due to picking up extra clinics as well as being out of town, so I apologize. Please point me in the right direction, and I'll be happy to take a look.

Hi Polly, no problem on the levels. I think between some Google time and Tex's responses I have this understood a bit better. The basic issue was how much per day is safe to take.

After taking 3k IU per day over the summer my levels came back at 12nl, still low. My GI doc has me on 50k IU per week and I am continuing the 3k IU per day dose for a total effective daily dose of 10k IU. If I did my math correctly based on my previous response rates, that would allow me to increase my level form 12 ng/ml to about 32 ng/ml in roughly 2 months.

Joe,

Am rushing off, but glanced quickly at your first post in the thread you cited and noted that you are taking retinol, which interferes with vitamin D absorption. Perhaps this is the reason for your slowly-rising Vitamin D level (forgive me if you already know this - as I mentioned, I haven't been following posts as throughly as I'd like).

"2. Very recent research brings another very important issue to light. Retinol, a form of vitamin A, competes with vitamin D (even the preferred vitamin D3) and prevents its absorption. When you supplement vitamin A you can do it in two forms. Beta carotene, or pre-vitamin A derived from vegetables (or a supplement) which, in your intestines, is converted into the correct amount of retinol needed by your body. Your body will not convert beta carotene into excessive levels of vitamin A. Retinol, the other means of supplementing vitamin A, when given directly as a supplement, bypasses the natural controls of the body as seen above when beta carotene is the source. One could, therefore, get too much vitamin A in the form of retinol".

Polly, I enjoyed the site you posted. Just went there for a quick look and about an hour later I'm back here. I found a lot of interesting videos at "Our Videos" which led me to other links and more reading. I love to read this stuff and am learning so much.
