You can't convince me that the medical research industry is not dead set on trying to find a way to prove that diet control is worthless for treating any diseases, (including celiac disease.
) Here's an interesting research article that concludes that diabetic children with celiac disease do not need to follow the GF diet. After two years of prospective longitudinal follow-up, children who followed a gluten free diet and those who kept to a regular diet showed no significant difference in glycemic control, celiac symptoms, or z-scores for weight, body mass index, or height.
Note that the title of the article is Diabetic Kids With Celiac Disease Might Not Need to Be Gluten-Free Right Away, but there is no suggestion anywhere in the article, related to when they might need to start, (if ever). It simply implies that the diet doesn't matter.
If you look at the data, though, over time, one thing is clear, (and the authors missed this completely) - with time, diabetes apparently masks the clinical symptoms of celiac disease, (but obviously not the laboratory symptoms).
Unless I missed it, nowhere in the article is any mention made of upper-endoscopy exams to determine the extent of villus damage. It appears that all the researchers tested for was TTG antibodies, and, of course, they noted clinical symptoms, by observation or verbal questioning, (not by scientific measurement). They were out to prove that diet makes no difference, and they succeeded, (by stacking the deck).
My guess is that they probably did take biopsies of the small intestine, (at least in a representative sample), but the data conflicted with their desired results, so they simply didn't report it.
Call me paranoid, but it's pretty clear to me that the current trend in medical research is leaning toward researchers who are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, (by whatever means necessary), to prove that diet is worthless as a treatment for any disease. I can't reach any other conclusion, when I read a report such as this.
It appears that the medical research industry is determined to prove that the premise of George Orwell's classic novel, Nineteen Eithty-Four, is alive and well, (at least within the medical community).
