I just saw the Vitamin D newsletter about Autism tonight. What do you think about it?

The grandson of my long time friend, who died recently, is autistic. His grandfather thinks it was caused by too many shots at a time.......

Hi Joan,

Haven't checked out the latest newsletter yet, but will do so. Yes, low vitamin D levels have been associated with autism.

And some parents believe that their child's autism was caused by childhood immunizations, despite the fact that repeated studies have not validated this. There was a British physician who originated this idea some years ago and wrote a book......I believe he has been totally discredited (and even sanctioned) now.

My personal belief is that autism is a complex disease with multifactorial etiology i.e. genetic to be sure (researchers are identifying new autism genes everyday) and perhaps environmental exposures too. Often when parents first become concerned about autism symptoms, it coincides with some other usual toddler experience like a fall on the head or a booster shot, so they make a connection. BTW, you are probably aware that parents of autistic kids often report improvement on a GF/DF diet.
