Apparently it's common for MC'ers to have other autoimmune

Post by IDreamInColor »

I've been reading all I can about MC, and I'm finding alot of articles stating that people with MC often develop other autoimmune diseases.
Just curious is anyone here, like me, has other autoimmune diseases along with the MC. And if so, which came first, the MC or the other.

I have graves disease, autoimmune sinus disease and now MC, I'm almost afraid to know what those antibodies are going to attack next, sheesh.

Hi Idream:

I think there is a poll in the "polls" section on this question. If I recall results from it correctly many of us have other autoimmune disorders and thyroid issues are very common. I have hypothyroidism, and also other non-food related allergies.

Oh, awesome, thank you for pointing it out. I've only been on the boards for a couple weeks or so and haven't fully investigated everything. Thanks for the info :)

As far as I know, I have one other autoimmune disease which is hypothyroidism.

Dear Idream..

I recon for me, in addition to MC, .... ataxia (balance issues), possible rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis (if that counts as autoimmune induced).

So much for this being only a "nuisance disease".

Idream, along with MC I also have Crohns, Raynauds and various allergies. In talking with my GI doctor it does seem common for people to have 2 - 3 different processes that are all autoimmune related.

FAO Joe, and anyone else really

You say you have Raynauds... that is the when your hands and toes lose circulation when the weather changes isn't it? I think I may have had that all my life... think I should maybe bring it up with the dr?

But before being diagnosed with MC I have had a form of RSI (Tendonitis) in my wrists for years, but dunno if they are linked because they think my MC was medication induced!

Katy,

Don't be surprised if your tendonitis improves when you have been off gluten for a while. It is amazing what happens when that inflammation is removed.

I'm still eating gluten atm so I don't know if that is part of the problem (this is on drs orders at the moment, my diet may change dramatically after the 26th as that is when I next see him). But the tendonitis has been around since I was 14 (near on 9 years now)

Here is an interesting blog post from "The Gluten Doctors," a medical practice in California that specializes in gluten sensitivity. There is research showing you develop autoantibodies sometimes 10 or more years before you get an actual autoimmune disease. This is the time period when PREVENTION is so important by way of a following a gluten-free diet to reduce inflammation.

Of course, that's exactly what Dr. Fine has been claiming for at least 12 to 15 years, now - that the Enterolab stool tests are capable of detecting antibodies to gluten-sensitivity, many years before celiac disease actually develops.

The mainstream medical community has done an excellent job of ignoring his technology contributions, so far, though. Apparently professional snobbery is more important to them, as a group, than their patients' best interests.

And speaking of professional snobbery, this practice got a slap on the wrist for using Enterolab and other "non-proven," non-university based diagnostic methods. Apparently you either follow the Celiac Disease Foundation guidelines, or you're out of the club.
