confused about maltodextrin

Post by Martha »

Does maltodextrin have gluten? Jean's list of gluten products/additives has it with an asterisk; the celiac website says that in the US it is not made of wheat and therefore is gluten-free. I'd really like to know, because my favorite rotisserie lemon-pepper chicken from Kroger lists maltodextrin as an ingredient.

The celiac site also says that MSG is gluten-free, while Jean's list has it as something to avoid. ??

If I call the company and ask whether some product is gluten-free, can I be pretty sure that their answer will be correct?

Although I am in remission, with the help of Entocort for 3 months and coconut since July, even while eating a regular diet, I decided that this would be a good time to go GF and heal my gut. I've been eating GF for a week and a half now. Way too soon to see any changes in anything, right? Surprisingly, I don't miss bread at all, and I have always eaten toast for breakfast! My son and his wife are being very supportive. They brought me an apple with candles in it for my birthday.

Let them eat cake

Personal size mini cakes, ready in a minute in your microwave. (Contain eggs, I think.)

If your health food store doesn't carry them, you can order from Amazon.

Hi Martha,

Yes, in the U. S., maltodextrin is made from corn, unless specifically stated otherwise on the label.

Most manufacturers have people answering their phones who are knowledgeable, and who have accurate information available to them, in case they have to look up any information for a caller. They will provide truthful answers.

If you should decide that you want to try some GF bread, Udi's comes highly recommended. I'm not sure if it is available in supermarkets, or only health food stores. Incidentally, Betty Crocker now has at least a couple of GF cake mixes available in most supermarkets, and a GF brownie mix, also. And they are competitively priced.

Good for you, for taking the bull by the horns, and adopting the diet, and good for your son and DIL. Yes, it usually takes a couple of months or so, for the diet to take effect, but you may begin to see some improvement sooner than that. Good luck with your diet program, and please keep us updated on your progress.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I noticed that a store in Utah is carrying GF cake and cookie mixes made by King Arthur. They all contained tapioca, however.

Thanks, Tex, for clarifying about the maltodextrin. That's really great. I probably didn't have to throw away quite as many things as I did.

And thanks to Tex, Gloria, and Joan for the information on gluten-free bread, and cake mixes. I'll get a birthday cake yet! Joan, thanks for all the birthday happies--so fun.

This forum is a great place. You all are so knowledgeable, encouraging, and supportive. Reading through the information here and everyone's experiences is helping me understand this disease better. It has been a big step for me to come to grips with the fact that I have a disease, it isn't curable, and I have to learn how to manage it. I always had a cast-iron stomach; I could eat anything! So having chronic D for so long has felt like such annoying weakness. Knowing that there is actually something that causes it, and something that I can do to help manage it is a relief. Thanks.

the orgran brand of gluten free foods have a cake mix (vanilla and chocolate) that is wheat, yeast, soy and dairy free. I am pretty sure these are available in the USA

it only needs egg and butter equivalent (i have a dairy & soy free butter equivalent in australia that i can use)

Orgran also have chocolate mouse that is the same cateogry (GF YF DF SF) and i was going to use this as the icing......
