Trying to help my dad, looking for input

Post by IDreamInColor »

My dad was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis a few years back, and he struggles with potty issues daily. It all started with gallbladder problems and removal, followed up by a severe case of C-diff caused from the antibiotics needed after the gallbladder surgery, from that he was diagnosed with disease colon and had a portion of his colon removed and then was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I know that ulcerative colitis is different than MC, but is there a food connection to UC, like gluten is to MC?
Can gluten cause ulcerative colitis?

Hi Idream. I'm sorry to hear that your Dad is having a rough time with the UC. I am not fully aware if UC can be affected by gluten, but I have CC and Crohns and know that gluten does play a big role in both of those conditions. It would not surprise me a bit if gluten affects the UC the same way

Hi IDream,

I'm sorry to hear of your dad's problems, and I hope that your research can help him. Like MC, virtually no official research has ever been done to explore the benefits of diet on UC, but I have no doubt that there is a connection, just as there is a connection between diet and all autoimmune diseases. You may find these threads to be beneficial, (especially the posts by NJ):

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Dear I Dream in Color,

So sorry to hear about your dad having UC. I hope you and he can find the best treatment solution.

Since he has UC and you have MC, I bet you share gluten sensitive genes.

Best wishes Ant
