I Got A Chuckle Out Of This

Post by tex »

I get a weekly newsletter from the American College of Gastroenterology, called Digestive Health SmartBrief. Today's newsletter contained a very brief, (one sentence), reference to a study that revealed that complications related to gastrointestinal endoscopies, actually occur 2 to 3 times more frequently than the GI docs disclose. The article that they linked to is titled:
GI Endoscopy Complication Rates Higher Than Suspected: Study
but the title of the item in the newsletter from the American College Of Gastgroenterology is:
Most GI endoscopy-related complications are minor

Here's the article that they referenced:

http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=644885

As always, the "most important" aspects of a study, depends on who is doing the reporting.

The good news, though, is that as the ACG mentioned, the increase noted was related to relatively minor issues, and the incidence of really bad complications, such as perforations, bleeding, heart attacks, and fatalities, were way down, compared with previous studies. In fact, they were about half of previous estimates. Obviously, that's a good trend.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Interesting quotes, it does highlight the issue of the writers or group perspective influencing the tone of the article.

I remember at one time reading that people with MC tend to have a higher rate of tears due to the procedure due to slightly abnormal friability of the tissue.
