I am so happy

Post by randyh »

Just checked on Frito Lays site and most of the Fritos corn chips are gluten free and so is the bean dip. This makes me very very happy. Sorry I am new to the GF diet so I am searching. Most of you probably already know this. Have a great weekend all.

Randy,

Not to rain on your parade, but be careful with Fritos - a few are OK, but if I eat very many of them, they tend to cause me to have D, (and so do competing brands of corn chips that are made by the extrusion process). I suspect the culprit is all the oil that remains in the chips, when they are made by extrusion. The good news is that tortilla chips contain far less oil, so they work much better, (and most of them are GF, also). Tortilla chips are made by frying slices of corn tortillas, which in turn are made from masa, from which much/most of the oil is removed, during processing, before the corn is wet-milled.

The only problems with tortilla chips, are that they contain a lot of fiber, (but so do Fritos), a lot of salt, (but less than Fritos), and they are very fattening, (which may or may not be a problem for you, depending on your circumstances).

Happy munching,
Tex

Fritos

I am starting with a few to be cautious, thanks for the advice Tex.

On another subject, I noticed that sometimes when I eat something that is going to be a "problem" I noticed that I get like a allergy sinus attack.

Ever have that issue.

That's a mast cell reaction. You are probably not only intolerant of those foods, but you may also be allergic to them, in the classic sense, (a histamine-based reaction). It also raises the possibility of mastocytic enterocolitis. You might find that taking an antihistamine, (an H1 blocker), at the start of such a meal, may minimize or eliminate your symptoms.

I like Fritos, but they give me an icky tummy so I go with the tortilla chips instead. I think it's the oil that bothers me. I used a napkin for my plate one day and was shocked at how much oil it soaked up. If I decide to eat a few I now use a napkin on purpose, even with the tortilla chips, which don't seem to bother me.

I found these great little Quinoa puff things at our health food store called Gogo Quinoa Crunchies, slightly sweet ( as I think they were made to be a kids -type of cereal) but they were great for munching on like popcorn or a corn chip. But alas I then found out that I can't eat quinoa...

Linda,

I also found out that quinoa does not work for me either.

Randy - go with the tortilla chips instead - just really better all around.

Hi Maggie,

My daughter heard a clip on CBC radio of a woman espousing the virtues of quinoa and she said it was supposed to be a totally non-allergenic food.. Not for me! It actually instantly gives me bad pains in my stomach, which wheat doesn't even do!
Tapioca causes me a simialr reaction.. I wonder what the common denominator is.. I don't really like eating the quinoa by itself but I did really like baking with the flour.
