Looking for Highest Calorie safe food
All:
What are the highest calorie foods that I can pour down my gullet to get some weight back. In the old days, ice cream would have done the trick.
Regards,
Rich

I've found that coconut works about the best of anything for me in adding calories, as it is well-tolerated by me and most people with MC. It even appears to have some healing properties for MC, as discussed on this forum, so you get a "twofer". Coconut milk has 445 calories per cup, so a little goes a long way.
And shredded coconut has 283 calories per cup, because it's pretty "fluffy". I usually have rice cereal for breakfast, and add a large handful of Bob's Red Mill gluten free coconut that I toast. Then sometime during the day I make a smoothie with coconut milk, orange juice, banana and frozen strawberries (or other fruit). I use half a cup of coconut milk. I make sure that the coconut milk I use doesn't contain guar gum or carageenan.......I had to look around in health food stores because most brands do add these compounds to provide a smoother texture. I also use a lot of coconut milk in curry-style stir fries.
And chocolate is one of my favorite ways to add calories!!
I usually eat daily half a bar of my favorite Theo Chocolate that is dairy, gluten and soy-free, and adds about 230 calories.
Good luck with putting on a bit of weight (or not loosing any more)........ My weight is a constant battle even though I've been healing for slightly over a year. I'll put on a few pounds, but then any little thing will take it right back off. I want to have a bit of a reserve, but am not doing too bad, at 5' 5" and 118 lbs. I was 108 at my lowest point.

Rich,
I ordered some Novartis Benecalorie for my mother when she had surgery in 2008. It's tasteless and adds 330 calories in only 1.5 ounces. According to the directions it can be added to just about anything. Mom ended up not needing it, but having gone a month without being able to eat after her stomach surgery nine years ago we wanted to be prepared.
I just googled it and it does not come up on the Novartis website, but I did find this Nestle link. It's available to order on Amazon, Walmart, Walgreens and probably more. There is a link to order from the Nestle site, too, but I did not click on it so I don't know where it goes. I suppose Nestle owns the product now, but I'm not sure.
I tried a dab of it in 2008 and it was tasteless to me. That said, I would never try to use it with my dairy issues. However, maybe there are other, similar products available. This product is the only one I've ever seen, but I stopped looking after I found it. I noticed some links to similar products on the Nestle site as well, but I did not explore them.

Well, I copied and pasted all that stuff, but forgot to say Benecalorie is a "low-volume, calorically-dense supplement".
Rich, I don't use soy milk. I was a few months ago, but many soy foods bother me so gave it up. I am using rice milk now (less than a 1/4 cup on cereal a couple of times a week). It seems to be okay for me, but plain ol' rice is a big no-no for me. Anyway, the calories are about the same in my Rice Dream rice milk - around 100 or so (maybe a bit more).

if you can tolerate soy - there are alot of soy based protein powders available (health food shop etc)
i have been using a vege based (NON SOY) protein powder for times when i have the rice milk, rice milk only has about 10% of the protein compared to cows milk
things like this might be good when you are travelling and need a meal on a plane etc

Robbie,
I did get you confused with Rosie due to the avatar being the same. Though I gotta say, I like that patriotic avatar! Sorry about my mistake. I am brain fogged today anyways. I can see it in my posts. I am using the wrong words, typing a word twice, am a little dyslexic, etc. Have been editing or "cleaning up" many of my posts.
So Rosie, if you are out there, what brand of coconut milk do you use?

Rich, the name of the coconut milk is "Natural Value" and I buy it at Market of Choice. It just contains coconut and water. It's the only brand I've been able to find that doesn't have guar gum. If you aren't soy intolerant (like I am) coconut milk with guar gum may work just fine for you.
In trying to get my weight up, I try to add extra calories in a number of ways. The coconut and coconut milk is a good example. When I make my homemade chicken and beef stock, I don't skim off the fat. Besides, that fat lends a very nice savory flavor to the stock! Some people have suggested supplemental powders or drinks, but I haven't done that. Maybe I should. But I would rather get my extra calories from good-tasting real food! I've also become a fan of avacados which are pretty calorie-laden too. I think the trick is to find lots of ways to add to the calories. For example, I often add a couple of crumbled bacon slices to the avocado. Part of my problem with weight gain is that if I snack a lot, then it curbs my appetite for the main meal........it's like a zero-sum game!
I hope these ideas will work for you. I know how depressing it is to keep seeing the weight slip off.....
