Gluten Question

Post by Celie »

Hi all,
I started a GF diet about three weeks ago. Tonight my DH cooked our chicken (as he has forever) by flavoring it with the steam from beer. The beer itself never touches the chicken, but the steam does. Does the steam contaminate the chicken with gluten?

Thank you!

Hi Celie. even though this is an evaporative process, I would not touch it at all. It sounds great and would probably have a nice flavor, but given whats at risk I would avoid it. Is there an alternative that might be safer?

We have to remember beer really is just carbonated gluten

I would be wary too. Have you ever watched something boil? Depending on what it is, and how vigorously it's boiling, and how far away the chicken is, I could see where there could be some splattering as the bubbles burst, with microdroplets of the beer hitting the chicken.

There are non-gluten beers that could be substituted to keep DH happy and you feeling less anxious.

I would be very wary and also be careful on your selection of chicken since most contains gluten.

In the future, we will not use beer anymore. I made sure to pick all natural chicken, I removed all the suspicious seasonings from the cabinet, but I forgot to tell him not to use the beer. We can use other things to steam with. I guess I will cook something else for me to eat this week;(

Thanks!

How about finding some of that gluten free beer to cook it with?
I am not a beer drinker but I have seen posts on here that there is such a thing...

Celie,

There are a lot of brands of GF beer, these days, but Redbridge may be one of the easiest to find, since it's made by Anheuser-Busch.

We love to make beer can chicken but we now use cola instead. We love to do turkey this way as well (use a Foster's can but rinse can and replace contents). For those of you who have never had chicken this way you stick the can in the chicken's butt to hold it upright. The liquid in the can steams the beer and the fat drip out. It's delicious and very moist.

We've had discussions about GF beer before - if I remember correctly it requires barley to start the malting process and therefore might not be truly gluten free but may meet the government standard ot be called gluten free.
