Moving Pains

Post by randyh »

So I have some light discomfort (pain) under the lower parts of my ribs on both sides.

Anyone ever have anything like that before?

My pains move around my abdomen on a regular basis, so not sure if this is something new or not.

Funny at night I have no pain until I get up in the morning and then eat breakfast, then the fun starts, all kinds of strange things, pains all over my abdomen. I am a little over a week into my GF diet so not sure what to expect. I am sure it will take time for things to heal.

Everyone is somewhat different, but those are pretty common symptoms.

Yes, it will get better, after the diet begins to help.

Hi Randy,

The only time I get pains is if I eat certain foods, specifically quinoa and tapioca. ( I also get D. from them) A lot of other foods will give me D. but not pain. So I am wondering if it is what you are are eating for breakfast. Does it happen with what ever you eat? Have you tried eating something that you know does not bother you...( I know that doesn't make sense, but what I mean is, something that you have eaten at another time of the day and you know for sure you didn't get pains from it?)

When I get those pains, it is from gas moving through my intestines (big gas that bulges things out and makes it hurt) and of course it moves all over as the gas works it wasy through. I take a pill called Physeme (can't recall the name of the active ingredient) and the pain goes away. It is the only med that goes into the intestine and anulls the gas in there. Most just work in the stomach. You might be able to figure out if your pains are from what your eating for breakfast by taking some Physeme (available at any drug store, over the counter) when you get them.. If the pain goes away, then they are probably gas pains and it is probably because you are reacting to what you have eaten. As you can tell by our posts, many of us have many other different intolerances than just wheat, casein or soy. Oats is a possible one ( from gluten contaminated oats or just from the oat protein (avenin ) in them.) Another is eggs.

Hope this is of some use.

Randy, have had the same issues. I am always surprised on how well I feel when resting and in the morning. Then I get up and it begins. I have always thought it was related to gas and for me, when I am in a bad spell, it doesn't matter what I put in my mouth. Ginny

I have tried eating different things, from just rice cereal with a little honey, to eggs and bacon, its all seems the same to me. I also have general anxiety disorder, so sometimes the pain if from that also, I never really know.

Just get discouraged sometimes about this and not sure what to think of all the things that happen in my body.

I love the morning because I get up feeling "normal", then after I eat, sometimes brain fog, dry eyes, general feeling bad, it goes away just about in time for lunch, then spend the afternoon feeling the same way.

I know its going to take time to heal up my gut, and allot of this is probably caused by a leaky gut. Because I worry so much I am sure that adds to it. I am about 2 weeks into my GF diet, so I will just keep trudging along. I usually feel pretty good on the weekends as the anxiety subsides, then on Monday here we go again.

To top it off, my back has been giving me pain. This is so much fun, NOT!!! Just take some tylenol and keep on going.

Thanks for the advice and sorry to whine so much, just get worried and discouraged and don't want to go running off to the doctor every time I have a little pain here and there, that usually ends up with them telling me they can't find anything.

Randy,

Are you eating GF rice cereal, or ordinary rice cereal, (such as Rice Krispies)? Most breakfast cereals contain malt extract, or some form of malted barley, which does not have to be specifically pointed out on the label, the way that wheat gluten does, but we react to it, just as strongly as wheat gluten. Rice Chex is an example of a GF cereal, and there are several other brands that can be bought at health food stores, but most of the cereals sold at ordinary grocery stores, (other than 6 of the Chex cereals), contain barley malt, or some other form of "gluten".

Box of rice chex marked GF. Also a hot rice cereal, that seems to go well.

I am trying to read all ingredients on everything, I have been pretty successful so far.

Today has been the first day in a while the I have not had brain fog after I eat so I am tracking my diet to see what might be a problem. This morning I had some ham and eggs, with green chili of course since I live in NM, that is a must, and put it on some all corn tortillas.

My wife noticed that when I eat potatoes it seems to bother me so I guess I will eliminate that for now and see how it goes.

My first outing this weekend since going GF this weekend, helping a friend brand his cows and such, will take some food with me just in case. They always have such good food, so its going to be a test.

Its so nice when the fog clears, its beautiful day when that happens, now if I can get rid of this back pain, it even seems to be waining some today.

Thanks Tex.

Maybe the diet is beginning to show some benefits, already. Usually, it takes a while to see much improvement in the brain fog. For many of us, it is the last symptom to improve.

FWIW, I never found it necessary to stop eating chilies when I was recovering, though most doctors say that we should avoid spicy foods.

I sure miss the Land of Enchantment. I used to go there every fall in late September, or October, for a hunting or backpacking trip. About 20 years ago, though, due to work obligations, I had to stop going, and now I'm gettin' too old to be climbing mountains. :sigh: I love the beautiful, rugged country out there, though. It truly is enchanting.

P. S. A few of us react to Rice Chex, (and so do a few celiacs), but no one know why.

I am cautiously optimistic. Even my eyes are not bothering me as much today. Two meals and no eye symptoms today. But I am still cautiously optimistic. I enjoy the good days when I get them.

I have live in New Mexico for a little over 30 years. I consider it home. Chili is a staple product in the kitchen here and I miss it when I have to travel. I live in the Southeast Corner of New Mexico about 180 miles north of El Paso TX. We have a combination of the high plains desert and mountains about 40 miles east of us.

Been doing some research on leaky gut syndrome, wow, very interesting. So the key is to get my diet under control to heal my gut to heal up. That should stop some of these blasted symptoms then.

I guess what I don't understand is why it comes and goes sometimes. It seems that there are times when everything just seems to be ok.

I have been concerned that some of the pains that I have been having were to do with my pancreas, maybe the back pain but I cannot associate the pain with eating and it goes away when I rest. So I think I am just being "anxious" as I usually am over some obscure pain in my body. I always feel silly when the pain goes away for being so worried about it. That is what my GAD is mostly about, my pain in my body. I was reading that leaky gut syndrome can cause anxiety so I am hopeful that will subside as I get my diet under control and heal my gut.

Well this turned into a long post.

Thanks again and again Tex.

For some people, MC comes and goes, like Crohn's disease, but most of us are not that lucky, and it's always there, unless we continue our treatment at all times.

For some of us, MC causes an inflammation of the pancreas, so it's certainly possible that you might have such symptoms. Fortunately, the symptoms usually go away as we get our MC symptoms under control.

You're most welcome.

Randy, I noticed you said potatoes bothered you, well they are a part of a family called "nightshades" and some of us have trouble eating them as well. It probably took me months before I was sure that potatoes were a no-no. Tomatoes I knew right away were not going to work. It really is trial and error.

Rice Chex (GF) bothers me sometimes and I believe it is because of the preservative.

Hope you have a great weekend. Ginny

Rice Chex (GF) bothers me, as well. Ginny, thanks for mentioning the preservatives because I couldn't figure out why I couldn't eat them either.

Randy, maybe take a look at the kind of milk you are using on the cereal...

Thanks for the information and the reassurance.

I will take a look at this milk, however this morning I had some cereal with the same milk and I feel great. Not even any eye symptoms today.

Back pain is almost gone and not so much a problem.

Almost gluten myself today, I had some beef jerky in my computer bag, something that I have had in there for a while, I put it in my mouth and decided to check the label, sure enough, wheat was part of the ingredients, spit it out before swallowing it. So I am off to the store to find some new jerky for the weekend since I am headed to the ranch I like to have some in my truck. Have to remember to pack some food since not sure what they will have to eat this weekend.

Have not had any potatoes since the other day and everything is pretty good today. Thinking that I might have to steer clear of them.

Thanks again everybody.

Randy,

It sounds like you are already learning how to determine food intolerances. You are on the path to healing. Good job!!
