Michael Mahoney Hypnotherapy for IBS
All:
Back when my doctors continued to tell me that I had IBS, I purchased a set of hypnotherapy CD's by Michael Mahoney in an attempt to control my symptoms.
Well I have decided to dust them off, download them into my phone, and use them when I travel. Because I recall how very soothing and relaxing they were. Furthermore, some of us have an IBS component to our conditions so relaxing the gut is always a good thing.
Anyways, I strongly recommend this system to anyone who feels frustrated and wants to enjoy deep relaxation and "escape" time. The stress reduction aspect of this series can only help the MC symptoms.
And if not, they are very enjoyable to experience regardless.
Going to try them out again on my flight to Denver tomorrow. Makes the journey much shorter :)
Rich
P.S. Has anyone tried hypnotherapy? I have tried this several times over the years and even had someone teach me how to hypnotize myself (which I can still do today). It is excellent for controlling pain. Not sure why I didn't think of this sooner.

i use relaxation music all the time
at work, escape my office and sit outside with the headphones on,
of a night, especially if i am in pain or discomfort with MC stuff
I have just started reading a book you might be interested in, it is easy to read and aimed at us independant types.
Getting past OK , the self help book for people who dont need help - richard brodie
he is ex microsoft guru who burnt out and then spent 3 years in search of a more meaningful life.
easy read, short sections, i have found it good to release pre MC life beliefs and make assessments on my life how it is now
good luck for your trip, stay well

Hi Rich,
I have tried hypnotherapy and for me it is hands down the best form of therapy. When your body is relaxed, your mind tends to follow, which allows for lucid thinking. I think a lot of people mistakenly associate "hypnotherapy" with some kind of "hocus pocus", and discount it right off the bat. I have never been "hypnotized", just been in a deeply relaxed state, which is sooooo soothing, and helps with everything, no matter what the problem is.
I actually use the "tools" of hypnotherapy in my daily life. I work on trying to stay tuned into my body, so when I sense that I'm getting uptight, I consciously try to relax my neck and back area, as well as my breathing. This enables me to sometimes short circuit a stress reaction before it gets the best of me.
Anyhow, hope you have a stress-free and enjoyable trip - I think using your tapes is a great idea!!!
Warm regards,
Kari

Rich, have the same tapes and used them in the beginning when I was diagnosed incorrectly. The first session, what I recall, is the best. I can't tell you how many times I have fallen asleep. The second session could help a little if you put everything in prospective, i.e. the worrying we do about the disease, the day to day frustrations, and the time we allow for this disease to consume our thoughts. Joe, Kari, Ginny,
Slept like a baby using Mike's Hypnotherapy sessions on the plane. I am pretty sure the ultimate goal is not to fall asleep, but perhaps there is also a subliminal message. But I am simply using them to relax and fall asleep. Works better than valium or ambien.

Hi Rich,
Glad you remembered the tapes and they worked so wonderfully!!! Since my family lives in Norway, I often have to take the track across the ocean, and now that I live in Colorado, the trip is much longer. I have two layovers - once domestically and once in Europe. I've always had a lot of problems relaxing in the airplane seat - I have no fear of flying, just can't seem to get comfortable. My restless leg syndrome gets activated, and I squirm and squirm (while listening to everyone else snoring:). Anyhow, I will look into the idea of a hypnotherapy tape for my next trip - thanks for sharing.
Love,
Kari

Rich,
I live in Littleton - by the foothills, half an hour southwest of Denver. I agree, Colorado is beautiful, and I love it here. I'm so fortunate that my son (only one) settled here, so when I retired from the financial services industry in NYC 4 years ago, I moved out here to be near him and my 3 grandchildren:). I assume you stayed in downtown Denver when you were here?
Love,
Kari

Joe - I'm not familiar with that town, but understand it's near Colorado Springs. It sounds like you moved around quite a bit before settling in New Hampshire. Did you grow up there?
Rich - that's the next town north of me - had I known, my SO and I would have had you over for a GF/DF/SF/YF meal:):):). For the last couple of months, I have had nothing but disastrous restaurant experiences (including Outback), so I'm staying home for now:). Let's try and get together next time you're here???

Kari,
Deal... I will let you know next time I am up your way!!! I tend to dance around near everyone on this board (except for Gabes) at one time or another. Wouldn't that be a funny strategy for me? I could use all of you on this forum as my "underground railroad" for gluten free eating when traveling. Now that would be a creative solution. What you say, Tex??? :)
I had ribs at Hacienda Colorado, a Mexican restaurant in your area. Probably wasn't the best idea but a local recommended them. They were THE BEST RIBS I have ever had. Need to research if they are safe. They seemed to not kill me.

Kari Woodland Park is about 20 miles west of Colorado Springs up Ute pass 'behind' Pikes Peak. It is at an elevation of 9,600 feet which is above the 6000 foot altitude of Colorado Springs.
My story in short:
Grew up in NJ & NH
Had a job that had me traveling a bunch as a field engineer 1983 - 1985
Took a job at AMD in Austin Texas in late 1985.
While in Austin got a call from Seymour Cray of Cray Computer asking me to join the newly forming team in Colorado Springs. He knew of my capabilities from my days as a field engineer. This was a dream offer for a young engineer.
Cray bought the house and moved us from Austin to Colorado Springs in late 1986
I worked with Cray Computer until closure in 1994.
Moved back to NH and worked for a company called Imaging Automation Inc., where I developed a border security system that allowed for a bunch of international travel, including 8 trips to Australia (lots of fun)
Imaging Automation went out of business in 2002. In 2003 I got a call to interview and ended up joining MIT where I have been since.
Overall a lot of fun and had a chance to see various parts of the US and with the international travel I was able to visit 18 countries.
I am glad that I am settled down now, although it was a of of fun.
