Anyone gone straight from Entocort to Prednisone?

Post by hoosier1 »

I am considering this. Anyone done this? I would assume this is a simple, immediate transition.

Be very careful, because while transitioning from prednisone to Entocort is fairly straightforward, going in the other direction can be fraught with peril, because it's difficult to predict how much residual budesonide may be retained in your system. GrannyH once experienced a life-threatening corticosteroid overdose because her doctor failed to consider the residual budesonide in her system, when he prescribed prednisone to treat a back injury. It caused a major blood pressure problem for her, that she still has to treat, on a daily basis.

Those are uncharted waters, in which few doctors have much experience, and not much information is available.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Prednisone seems to be the treatment of choice for so many ignorant GI docs... because it is cheap! Yes it works.. and a remission can last for months... but the side effects.. if taken often are frightening... a simple google search will tell you all you need to know about prednisone.

Even though the doctor KNEW I was on entocort when the prednisone was prescribed.. he knew nothing about the dosage could do to my system.. in fact he told me to keep taking the entocort while on the prednisone for the back injury. He darn near killed me! Had I not stopped the entocort on my own.. seemed common sense to me.. I probably would have stroked out... instead I made it to the hospital in time to get my blood pressure under control. Was in there three days.

After my hospital stay and I did the nuclear stress test stuff... came out ok... but my blood pressure has never been under control without medication since. I never went back to that particular family doctor again.. had only used him briefly because a family member insisted...

Be very careful!

If you decide to do this, Rich, I do hope that you will make the pred treatment as short term as possible. I might consider pred again if my life were at stake (haha) but I'd sure be careful.

Good Luck.

Dear Rich,

I rarely try to give advice on here because I learned early on that each of us has to find our own treatment plan. That said, I'm going to break the rule with you. When I have read your posts I feel a sense of impatience and wanting things to be better now. With this terrible disease that isn't going to happen. I was started on predisone and asacol. I was not getting better and finally after CAT scans and continuing to complain they took me off the asacol (I was allergic to it). The side effects of predisone are terrible. My blood pressure went up, as did my eye pressure. My dentist didn't want to even clean my teeth because he said I more likely to have an infection. I put on over 30 lbs and was literally bouncing off the walls. Folks were concerned that there were problems between my husband and myself because of my bruising. I was finally weaned off after 6 months. I didn't have another severe flare for over a year. At that time they put me on Entocort and it worked just as well without the side effects.

You stated in your other post you felt you had a motility problem. If that's truly the case, then treat it with Immodium and see if it helps. There should be no problem taking the Entocort and Immodium at the same time.

I guess I am asking you to give yourself the time it takes to see if this treatment works before you jump onto something else. Some of the folks haven't seen any significant results for months because of the inflammation that is there.

Good luck on your journey,
Jan
