Most of us who are in a "flare" where we need to go to the bathroom quickly, also have to go in the middle of the night. That can keep us awake.

I still have insomnia sometimes when my MC is under control, but I've had bouts with insomnia all my life. I'm not sure that it's related to my MC.

I do, but I think it has more to do with my graves disease rather than the MC. My body goes into overdrive with graves and I have periods of insomnia quite often.

Yes, I have a problem with insomnia. I'm not quite sure now when it started. It's been a long time. I guess I'm dependent upon Ambien CR at this point and I still have some nights when I just can't get to sleep and many mornings I am up quite early. I honestly don't know if it's MC related or not.

I tried Lunesta and Ambien both left me groggy in the morning and I really didn't sleep all that well. My problem is staying asleep. I can fall asleep in the middle of traffic at a moment's notice..but I don't stay asleep. My doctor told me to be very careful with lunesta and ambien.. he said to make sure I didn't do anything that would over stimulate the brain after taking the pill.. tv, computer.. reading was ok. He told me he had several patients find themselves in walmart in the middle of the night buying cookies..not knowing how they got there...because they watched tv or were on the computer til they fell asleep.

A friend had something strange happen to her as well.. she woke up with chocolate all over her jammies..turns out she raided a pan of brownies in the middle of the night and didn't remember a bit of it.

I have taken temazepam for about a year now..it works..I stay asleep.

 MC permanently altered my sleep patterns, and even though I've been in remission for over 6 years now, the sleep problems still remain. :sigh:

Other than when I have had D. all night long, I have never had particular trouble sleeping , but I do sometimes have trouble getting to sleep. I take Nytol, made from the herb Valerian, available in drugstores over the counter. It just relaxes me enough to fall asleep.

I have had insomnia since I was a child, long before I was diagnosed with MC

I've had two types of problems. First was before I wa diagnosed with MC - at a certain point I was losing weight so fast, I stopped sleeping because I thought I had cancer, and this has almost certainly been stress related. Then, after a few weeks on Entocort, I also had problems with sleep, and after my MD told me to discontinue Entocort, this went away, but my sleep is very seldom long or deep nowadays.

I had problems getting to sleep prior to my going GF. I am sleeping much better now. I still wake up early but that's OK. I require a lot less sleep than my husband.

Last week I ran into a Chiropractor and her husband at an event I attended. The husband mentioned he baked a GF carrot cake for his wife. Later I got her on the side and we talked about being gluten intolerant. She said that several of her patients are gluten intolerant. Her husband was going to be gone for two months earlier this year so she thought she would experiment by eliminating gluten from her diet. She had always had a problem with waking up during the night and not being able to get back to sleep. After eliminating gluten she found she slept through the night. Her husband came back and they went out for hamburgers. They shared one large burger. She ate half plus the half a bun and that night she again woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. Because of this she determined she was gluten intolerant. Since then her husband has also eliminated gluten and his issues have also been resolved. I don't remember what his issues were but thought her situation was interesting and worth sharing here.

I am doing very well. Am down to 5 entocort a week without any problems.

Still try to keep up with reading here but can't afford the time it takes to write. I am very busy in winter. I teach computer classes at the recreation center here, am taking a two year Bible study class which requires a lot of reading, and dance three to four times a week.

I made a GF pumpkin pie in the slow cooker last week. It was great. Can't believe I ate the whole thing! Well not really, but most of it.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

I've had sleep issues for a few years so I'm not sure if it's related or not (I fall asleep okay but wake up
for several hours in the middle of the night). One strange note, last night I had a bad dream and then
woke up with cramping. Now I'm wondering if stress when I'm sleeping can trigger MC symptoms. JEEESH!

Charlotte, so nice to hear from you. I am glad the tapering down is going well. That it neat that you teach computer courses.. I just finished putting on a Beginning Computer course for seniors in a small outlying town about 15 miles from where I live. I didn't teach it but am the coordinator and helped set the computers up and take them down, and I look after planning the courses, taking registrations, etc. It is fun, rewarding work.

Charlotte,

That's a very interesting story about the Chiropractor and her husband, and their individual experiences with issues apparently caused by gluten-sensitivity. As Dr. Fine says, diagnosed cases seem to be just the tip of the iceberg.

Good for you, for doing all those things - I got tired just reading about it.

Nov 23 I posted this

Today I sat next to a woman at a luncheon I attended and she ordered a GF meal also. She said she discovered if she has gluten she wakes up during the night with a panic attack and cannot get back to sleep. She was disturbed because the rice pilaf she ordered had some very small pasta in it of which she ate quite a bit before she realized it. She is not looking forward to tonight.
