Sudden Setback - Spoke to Soon - Damn
Well there must be some kind of flu going around because I ended up in the ER last night. The D was non-stop and went to clear (could have had a colonoscopy as the illness made a good prep). They did a CT scan of my abdomen to evaluate the colitis and the results were OK per them. Normally, I am told I have thickening of the bowel wall. The flu caused me to not keep anything down either.
The last time I was that sick (and so suddenly), I was admitted on bowel rest for a week. So I am leery right now. I am home trying to recover and hoping that my BM's solidify somewhat. My fever seems to be breaking too.
Two steps forward, 2.5 steps back. Just what we all need, right?

Hi Rich,
So sorry to hear of your sudden set back - am afraid that's very typical of MC. Don't worry about jinxing yourself - we all go through the exact same thing. I have decided that my approach now is going to be to celebrate any time I feel great, because I know the despair is just around the corner.
Yesterday I was so sick (fire hose D) that I felt I was right back were I started in July, and got very depressed. Thank goodness, I'm feeling much better today and am hopeful that I have managed to short circuit the flare (probably jinxing myself now :):)).
Anyhow, keeping my fingers and toes crossed that things will get better for you quickly!!!
Love,
Kari

Rich and Kari,
Sorry to hear you both had issues. I had a 24 hour bug last week and it didn't last long but it was a rough day, so hopefully the same will be true for you and it will quickly resolve. It's always a worry that it could continue, isn't it? I flared last Christmas due to stress and some foods I was still trying to eat. I keep reading about other's flares and think I'm next. I think we get a bit of PTSD about our flares because they are so disruptive.
Hope by tomorrow you'll be feeling good again.
Love,
Mary Beth

Rich,
What a bummer - talk about adding insult to injury. Unfortunately, this disease doesn't make us immune to all the other ailments that everyone else gets - the problem is, since we are already vulnerable, the symptoms can be worse for us, and as everyone has pointed out, we can't help but worry about the symptoms agitating our MC, and resulting in a drawn-out flare. Fortunately, that usually doesn't happen, so I guess that's a sign that our immune systems are still functional, (despite our suspicions to the contrary, sometimes).
Your low WBC makes you even more vulnerable, of course, so it was probably a good idea to to get checked out in the ER, to make sure nothing worse was going on.
I hope that whatever it was, it will have run it's course by tomorrow, and you'll be feeling much better.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Kari,
Sorry to hear about your setback, also.
The fact that you're feeling better today is a very good sign, obviously, so hopefully you're back on the healing path already.

Yep the MC dance is definately a bit like Rocky Horror (or the hokey pokey.....)
its just a jump to the left............
early days i remember where i felt it was 1 step forward, 2 steps back I have found over the past 11 months as your gut heals it slowly turns around to 3 steps forward, 1 step back....... the events of this are less frequent and recovery doesnt take long.... Hang in there rich

Rich, how scary to end up in the hospital! Now that you are hydrated, checked out, and back home, it's good news that your fever is breaking. Hopefully you will get your system back on track soon.
Kari and Mary Beth it does sound like a lot of stomach flu bugs are going around, not to mention increased numbers of flares around the holidays. We know we can't avoid the flu, just like anyone else, but it sure seems to whomp us harder!

Rich & Kari - Hope you are feeling better today and that life deals you a better hand - should say this disease deals you a better hand.
Kari - Always been looking for an apt description of that type of D - Firehose D is a winner and goes into our vocabulary. Good attitude on your perspective of a good day - mine also.
Gabes - How like the hokey pokey this disease is.
Love, Maggie
