Pepto Bismol made my symptoms worse, but I believe I'm intolerant to it. There are others here who use it temporarily when they have a flare. It's not meant for long-term usage. I believe 8 weeks is the recommended time limit.

I also just came off of 9mg of Entocort that I was on for 2 weeks. I had horrible side effects.

Hi Lisa,

Like Gloria, I cannot tolerate PB either. (But she and I have far more intolerances than most, it appears).

Dr. Fine (of enterolab fame) originally developed the PB treatment. It does work for many: however, Dr. Fine himself discovered that the remission achieved by PB was temporary unless the patient also adopted the gluten-free (GF) diet at the same time. So now he just jumps to recommending the GF diet.
I spoke with him about this by phone some years ago - he believed PB was a safe treatment (doesn't worry about heavy metal overdose at the recommended treatment dosage) - just feels it is unnecessary since the gluten elimination is the real key. I would see no problem with you trying it along with the GF diet, if you don't exceed the recommended doses. It does have an anti-inflammatory effect and may help soothe your gut.

Love,

Polly

I tried it, but the chewables caused terrible bloating. I could never remember to take the recomended 8/day. After giving up, I discovered the Pepto tablets that you swallow. MUCH better. They probably have less calcium carbonate in them that can cause bloating. I now use Pepto for flares, but I'm not really sure it makes a difference.

Along with what Polly said about Dr. Fine's research, if my memory is accurate, in his original trial results, he was able to get over 85% efficacy from the Pepto Treatment. That's an extremely high rate of effectiveness, as drug treatments go. As far as I can determine, many/most drugs only show about a 60 to 70% efficacy rate, at the labeled treatment dose.

It is 8 or 9 tablets per day, (or the equivalent in liquid form), for a period of 8 weeks.

Karen,

Didn't it also turn your D black? In my case, it converted clear to slightly brown water to black water.

Pepto-Bismol also turned my tongue black. I discovered this when I brushed my teeth. :puke:

Come to think of it, it also turned my tongue black. :headscratch:

Karen, are you sure that you tried the Pepto treatment? Maybe that's why it didn't work for you.

I did the regime, Lisa, ( 8 per day for 2 months) and while I was doing it the D stopped but as soon as I stopped the pepto, it came back.. It was a treatment for symptoms, and I continued to use it as that , but it was by no means a cure.

Lisa I started taking caltrate a couple of days ago. I found out my calcium and vitamin d were a little low. It seems like it is helping a little. It seems like I have a little more energy. Also I think the calcium is supposed to be binding.
I am on asacol hd now for a week and a half and haven't had any serious side effects, just a little stomach cramping at first but it went away.

This Pepto thing is not working, I was so bloated and constipated last I only ended up taking 6 yesterday. The day before I took 3 and 3 the day before that. I stopped the Entocort on Monday. I couldnt sleep last night. I dont know what to do. I have lost 25 lbs since September. Everything I eat comes out whole when I poop. I dont know what to do anymore.

Lisa,

What are you eating? If you wish, post a sample day's menu and we can review it and offer suggestions. Since you don't seem able to tolerate medications so far, diet will be essential to your recovery.

Love,

Polly
