Never thought I'd say this...Happy to be going SCD!
Hi All,
Just had to share my realization. I have celiac and MC, over the weekend I decided to try adding rice back into my diet - I had been without for about a month, pretty much grain free for that time. It seemed okay, I had it for 3 days. By the end of the third day, I was bloated, puffy and had pains in my abs area, this was the day my DO said I should start the SCD. The pain was worse on day 4 (started SCD completely) - pain shooting up to my shoulder, but bearable, yet, really uncomfortable - especially when working - I clean houses for a living! Today was day 5, the pain was lower, still there, but clearly getting better, just had a bm and I am pain free!!! Woo Hoo - I can now see why I need this wonderful little diet for the next 3months! I could have waited until after the holidays, but I didn't want to risk being really sick and uncomfortable for Christmas! I'll miss the goodies, but that's okay, it will be worth it in the end! I will miss sugar and chocolate, but they aren't good for me anyway! I just had to share my realization, maybe it can help someone else.
Thanks for listening!

Good for you Theresa - thanks for sharing such happy news. I totally agree that it's better to take precautions you know work, rather than to risk intense suffering. Wishing you success in your very wise endeavor.

Kari

Hi Theresa that's great that you are trying the SCD diet out. Certainly pursuing the safe diet during the holidays will hopefully make your time more enjoyable and healthy

Hi Theresa!
Good for you for taking charge of your health! LOVE your attitude!
I have a suggestion, though. Why don't you try the paleo (caveman) diet instead of the SCD? The only real difference is that the SCD allows some dairy (homemade yogurt and aged cheeses, I believe). And most with MC cannot tolerate ANY dairy at all - no butter, cheese, yogurt, milk, ice cream, etc. The paleo diet allows NO dairy, so if you have a dairy intolerance, it would be better for you than the SCD. I originally tried the SCD, without much luck, because of my dairy intolerance.
Neither diet allows grains of any kind. I think you are wise to avoid rice! I do best with no grains at all. I have a suspicion that those with serious, multiple intolerances who continue to eat grains of any kind (yes, including rice) have a much longer and more rocky road to remission - and seem to need medication for longer periods of time. Just an observation based on our experience here over the last 10 years.
Good luck!
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Thanks all!
Yes, Joe - I am in Maine - Southern - yeah - it's cold outside! Yikes! I am not ready this year - lol! We were in NH for 8 years before coming here in 2006!
Polly, Actually, I am going dairy and egg free as per my DO - he also said, like you that dairy was too hard to tolerate with all my inflammation - thank you! I have gone SCD before, but only 3 weeks - then I quit!!! This time I have to do 3 months. I will check into Paleo - I think it's fairly close! Both my DO and GI think it's a good idea to go SCD w/o eggs and dairy.
This is the best place!
Thanks Theresa in ME

Theresa,
Good for you. I hope you're rewarded for your efforts by being completely symptom-free by the time the holidays begin.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Teresa, I wish you the best on your new diet. This is my first Christmas on my limited diet, although I have had since June to adjust to most of it, but I must say that feeling good (for a change) is so darn nice that it really is its own reward and motivation. I'm pleasantly surprised how easy I'm finding it despite all the tempatations around this time of year. I went to a potluck Christmas luncheon at work today, and am happy to report that I didn't even feel deprived not being able to eat 95% of the food that was there. I brought something I could eat, (GF tortierre) and there was ham and someone brought rice crackers, and I was quite full and content with those things, because I knew I would feel healthy and have no pain or discomfort for the rest of the day. I really didn't even think much about it, just enjoyed the conversation and comraderie. I am just so tired of "paying" so dearly for those fleeting moments of "tastiness"!! No longer even tempted....
You sound like you are going to find it easy to remember how good you are going to feel after eating right, as opposed to how lousy you would feel if you ate something you shouldn't. You've really got a winning attitude.

Theresa I admire you for taking the bull by the horns and making the diet decision for SCD. I, like Polly, have a hunch that the Paleo diet should be a bit more helpful and in time, you may find that the way to go.
Linda - I have the dreaded Christmas lunch out with our small group in the office of 7. I picked the restaurant and have been there before with no adverse reaction and they know me. No one from the office has been there and they all had wanted to go. Next Tuesday we are having some of our tenants attend a pot luck lunch and I am dreading it. Still a small group but the one who decided to do this lunch is bringing sandwiches for everyone and all are bringing a side dish. I am bringing what I want to eat. Have learned through these many years that I just go it alone.
Love, Maggie
