The title of the article at the link below is "Milk Not A Heart Risk", but what it really provides is further evidence that dietary animal fat is not connected with heart disease or cardiovascular disease, contrary to a long-held belief by many doctors. My doctor, (bless his obsolete information-filled heart), reminds me at least once or twice a year, that I should limit my intake of foods that contain significant amounts of animal fat, and eat those healthy whole grains, instead.
To the contrary, U.S. researchers examined 21 studies that included data from nearly 350,000 people and concluded that dietary intakes of saturated fats are not associated with increases in the risk of either coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease, the review says.
Another study of 23,366 Swedish men who consumed calcium above the recommended daily levels may reduce their risk of mortality from heart disease and cancer by 25 percent, while Australian researchers say their 16-year study of 1,529 Australian adults found people who ate the most full-fat dairy had a 69 percent lower risk of cardiovascular death than those who ate the least.
Anyone want to place any bets on how long it will take the mainstream medical community and the food industry to change their recommendations? Based on past performance, I'm guessing, "a long time".
Tex
It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

How long?? I would say never, some other justification will be found. First they would have to admit error and second there is the phrase / attitude that seems to be so prevalent in research"

My cholesterol went up when I went to a low carb diet higher fat diet, which I expected it might do. My Dr. just noticed the total count (247). When I said, whoa, my HDL is nearly 90 and my triglycerides have dropped in half she took a 2nd look. I told her I was pretty sure it was the light and fluffy LDL that had caused the increase and I wasn't concerned about it.
She asked me if I would at least go on niacin, which I agreed to do. I may do the more extensive cholesterol test to definitely prove that is what happened.
Gives even more credence to the Atkins diet. I personally know of several close friends who followed Atkins, and ate copious amounts bacon, fatty meats, etc., and ALL of their heart numbers improved to acceptable levels, not to mention they lost a ton of collective weight.
You guys may or may not recall that I recently had a physical, and my cholesterol levels dropped dramatically. I attribute this to the gluten free diet. Previously, my cardiologist told me I would need to remain on a statin to lower improve my numbers. Proved him wrong. I simply don't believe, or want to accept, that the pharmaceutical industry has my best interests in mind.
Interesting, Tex.

Regarding your comment about "confusing with the facts", that reminds me of a Director of Quality at my first employer. A man who was supposed to be statistically driven. He would routinely ignore the data if it didn't fit his pre-conception of the problem. One of his common phrases was, "take care of the small problems, and the big problems will take care of themselves". ???? Sounds a lot like our government, doesn't it?

Tex, it's certainly good news for us Cavepeople (on the paleo or hunter-gatherer diet).
Deb, if your HDL is 90, that's incredible and almost unheard of. As you know, HDL exerts a serious protective effect on the heart, regardless of the other values. (And I thought I was lucky with an HDL of 70).
Rich, congrats on improving your cholesterol level. I know folks who went on the Atkins diet and found that they became clearer-headed with improved focus, had almost no bloating, and saw improvement in joint/muscle aches and pains. Whaddya bet they had underlying gluten issues?
Love,
Polly

Good to hear from you! I always enjoy your thoughtful posts, responses, and obvious compassion. You are one on my main inspirations on this board.
You know, my aches and pains (arthritis in my hands especially) have virtually vanished. Do you think this is form the Entocort or more from the Gluten-Free? I am running 2 Entocorts/day (recall I started Entocort Sept 1). My doc wanted me off of it completely by the end of the year but per the advice of this board, I am staying on the overseas equivalent indefinitely for now.
I had an excruciating pain in my lower left quadrant last night that woke me up. Seems that most of my colon pain rests in this area but this was so extreme it reminded me of waking up during a colonoscopy. I went to the bathroom immediately and it seemed to help. Other than having the flu, this is the first time I have awaken from pain in the middle of the night. Not too thrilled about that and what it could mean. Such is life I guess.
I have noticed, suddenly, a change in my close-up vision too. Seems that literally overnight, I now need bifocals or reading glasses. Does anyone have any idea why this could have occurred? Now in February I have my 45th birthday, so perhaps I need to accept my middle-agedness finally :) I still find the immediacy of this "symptom" very odd.
Polly, how are things in my old stomping grounds of Maryland? Have you gotten a lot of that snow that was marching of the eastern seaboard last week? It has been freezing in Indiana. I had a large fire scene in Detroit last week and froze my bip off :) I was not looking forward to last week. I am in Columbia, SC this week and then I am thinking I am done for the year. This year took its toll on me in many ways so I am glad to see if go but I am scared of what 2011 has in store for me. Sorry about the venting everyone, but I know you can all handle it.

Polly, my most recent HDL was 83....still very good.
I was in a Mayo Clinic cholesterol study a couple of different times. Both times they used plant sterols, the first
time it was mixed into a yogurt; the second time in pill form. Both times my cholesterol dropped 10% in two
weeks. It was quite a while ago and I don't remember how it impacted my HDL. I continued with the sterols until the pill forms were discontinued and the only way I could find it was
in Benecol which I didn't want to eat (I think it required 2-3 tbsp per day). I think it might be available again
in other forms but I'm not sure. I do know that I will try that again, rather than statins, if I think there's an issue.

Hey Polly,
I remember back when I did the zone diet (40-30-30) it had a really distinct effect on my cognitive powers. The diet requires you to balance the proportion of protein, fat and carbs every time you eat. Dr Sears also stated that if half an hour (?) after a meal you felt fuzzy headed it meant you had overdone the carbs, and if you were hungry it meant you had underdone the fat. Or something like that. I don't have the book handy to check, but at the time it always seemed right.
I have a big christmas planned with family visiting. The day after boxing day the plan is for me to largely stop doing dumb things to my body, and start eating better. Guess since I was going to go paleo-light anyway, I might as well aim to zone it while I am at it.
