european survey on IBD

Post by harma »

For members on this site living in Europe, the european federation of IBD Patients association is doing a survey on the effects of an IBD in daily life. What is a positive thing is that MC, CC or LC is also included in this survey. If you life in Europe, and want to fill in the survey go to the website below (available in many languages).

Wow! That's impressive that an IBD organization would actually classify MC as an IBD. We're really coming up in the world.

Thanks for posting this,

Hey thanks for that, currently filling it in, but i dont like that it presumes that I have been to a&e for it before being diagnosed! Nor the fact it says MC/CC and ignores LC!

Naty, FWIW, they are technically correct. The original description of this disease, named collagenous colitis, was written by the Swedish pathologist Claes Lindström, in 1976. The following is from my manuscript:
In 1980, the term “microscopic colitis” was first introduced, to describe patients with chronic watery diarrhea, whose biopsy samples showed lymphocytic inflammation under the microscope, even though the mucosa of their colon appeared normal to the unaided eye.3 These patients did not always present with thickened collagen bands in the subepithelial area of their colon.

A proposal to rename “microscopic colitis”, (MC), to “lymphocytic colitis”, (LC), was made by Lazenby, in 1989, though many authorities use the term “microscopic colitis”as an “umbrella” term, to refer to cases for which the markers of either collagenous colitis, or lymphocytic colitis are present, while some authorities suggest that the term should only apply when both types of markers are present.4
IOW, as far as I am aware, that proposal wasn't universally adopted, so we see all sorts of varying references to the disease, depending on the personal opinion of the speaker/author.
