Is there an alternative to banana in the BRAT diet?

Is there an alternative to banana in the BRAT diet?

Long story short, I'm finally just about accepting I have this pain in my life (my bum!) that is very unpredictable so I have made it one of my New Years Resolutions to be completley prepared to deal with any flare ups as and when the appear in my life.

I have been looking round this site a lot recently and have noticed the BRAT diet mentioned a lot, which seems like a good idea and is something I am keen to follow.

However there is an issue there, I HATE BANANA's. I mean like hate more than having essays to do level of hatred. Seriously I feel physically sick even contemplating eating one.

So my question to you all is, does anyone know of anything/have any suggestions as to what can replace banana? Or should I maybe think about another diet to follow when/if the next flare up happens?

Well, you can simply leave out the banana, and try a RAT diet, of course. :lol:

The reason for the banana is because it is extremely common to develop a potassium deficiency when going through an MC flare, because of all the electrolyte depletion that occurs with heavy-duty D. Most of us show a magnesium deficiency now and then, unless we preempt it by eating bananas, or by taking a potassium supplement. Another reason why it is in the BRAT diet, is because almost all of us can tolerate bananas just fine, in fact, for many of us, it seems to be the only fruit that we can tolerate. Other than that, cutting them out of the diet wouldn't appear to be breaking any major laws. :shrug:

Hi Naty,

Reading your post made me curious to find out which other foods are rich in potassium, since I have recently had to give up eating bananas. I noticed on the list (see the above link) that a baked potato has almost double the potassium of a banana, so perhaps this could substitute for you? Also, cantaloupes showed a high potassium count. Anyhow, hope you find this useful - good luck.

My last blood test showed I was slightly deficient in potassium for the first time. The explanation is that I stopped eating potatoes in March (based upon the MRT test results) and tomatoes in June. I eliminated all fruit over a year ago. The only foods I'm eating now with significant sources of potassium are Brussel sprouts and almonds. I can't eat fish because they're high in histamines. I just tested potatoes a few days ago and had deteriorated BMs for the next two days. :sad:

Can anyone recommend a good supplement for potassium?

Potatoes it is then, just so i can say i'm on the PRAT diet :lol:

Holidays have been weird this year, everyone in the family (Parents, siblings and grandparents) have all come down with flu between the 20th and yesterday! So i've been hiding from them all! You have a good holiday?

Hi Naty,

Sorry to hear about everyone getting ill - hope your attempt at staying away from the germs will prove successful!!!

I had a very nice time with my 3 grandkids: Maria, Aidan and Naty. We celebrated Christmas eve at my house, Norwegian style, which includes opening gifts. They had to wait until after dinner to open their presents, which was quite torturous for them, but it certainly escalated the anticipation and excitement. It's so much fun to be with kids at Christmas time :grin: .

The only "bad" for me was that I had a caffeine withdrawal headache which started Christmas eve and lasted 48 hours - ouch!!!

That's good to know about potatoes. I can't always eat bananas--they have to be just right or they make me gag. :puke: I don't particularly care for potatoes but I am glad to know they are a potassium alternative if I need one.

Our holiday was very quiet, as it was only my husband and me and our two youngest. But it was nice. I hardly ever have a cold, but I came down with one a couple of days ago and feel quite under the weather today. That's sort of a bummer because it is our 25th wedding anniversary today and my husband and I were thinking about going on a date.

Also, since I am extremely alergic to bananas and am known in my circles as the Potato Queen - I seem to be getting enough potassium and like the idea of a PRAT diet.
