Tried a Pro-Bio for 3 weeks and thinking of stopping
So I gave Philips Colon health a shot for a month (well, almost). As I stare into the bottom of the bottle that has only a few capsule left, contemplating whether or not to purchase more, I can't say that I feel any better having used them. I think I have been more bloated since starting them. Perhaps I need to give them more time but I feel that a month seems reasonable.
I see the DF Culterelle may have some efficacy via Mary Beth and others, but in general, it appears that adding more complexity to my already stressed GI system is probably not a good idea.

most vitamin, herb type treatments take 6 - 8 weeks to work
for most products they will suggest doing optimum dosage for 6 weeks and then reduce down to the maintenance dose
as pro-biotics is encouraging good bacteria and reducing the bad this could take time. the same as the general proven belief here, that it takes 12 months or more to eliminate inflammation and resolve leaky gut issues.

LOL, Hey Joe, How are you doing?
I am laughing because perhaps you and Tex recognize the engineer in me who lays down a finite amount of time to see a result, doesn't see it, then moves on. Trying to kick that habit but it seems to be built into my DNA. Patience cheeky monkey (quoting Gabes in her brilliance and calming state of mind).
I was thinking about you regarding cameras today. I have a fire scene with, tragically, a fatality in PA next week and I need to take all my gear. But I have presentation in Hartford Monday morning so I need to take business clothing too (even more weight). Since I want to lighten my load, I am going to take my little Canon G11 and its separate flash (leaving the D300 home). Have been playing with it around the house and am pleased with the results. I only wish the recycle time between photos was faster (too much delay for the flash to recharge and the camera to write the photo to the memory card).

Hi Rich, yeah us engineers are a tough lot when it comes to patience... Fortunately MC and the kind folks here are helping with that lesson. We do like turning a variable into a constant, makes life easier (sometimes). I do envy Gabes state of mind... certainly a wise lady.
I have never played with the G11, let me know what you think.
If you are in Hartford you are only about an 50 minutes from Hanscom Air Force base, if you wanted a tour of the base and /or lunch or dinner let me know.

Joe,
I had no idea I was that close to you being in Hartford. I would love to take you up on your offer but unfortunately my schedule is so tight due to the new, last minute, loss in PA that I actually chartered a learjet to bounce me out of hartford and into PA as soon as I am done. But you too, my friend, are DEFINITELY on my list to meet in person soon!!!
Will let you know how the G11 performs. The only other negative I see with it on scene is that the automatic lens cap can get all gunked up from the debris on scene. I have seen others with the older G9 (similar) have this problem.
Man I wish I had some time to drop by to meet you this time.

Rich,
I've seen your comment on my thread and just stumbled across this on in a half sleepy fogness (Medication is currently kicking in) but my brain seems to think that maybe you have gotten MC the same way as me? (Via SSRI's?, I'm not sure if you mentioned it in an earlier post, if you haven't ignore me and the brain cell.
But basically if you have, I just wanted to share with you the info my GI gave me... This can also apply to anyone else while i tink about it.
Anyway... to get to the point, My GI told me NOT to take Pro-biotics because of the way I contracted MC, he did go into a massive explination as to why not to (something to do with the good bacteria in gut actually being bad or something). So I was pondering if maybe this was the same situation for you.
I hope that made sense.

Probiotics
Rich,
I don't claim to be an expert, but I have a very good friend who is a pharmacologist and owns his own health food store and also a holistic nutritionist. I don't believe it takes that long for a probiotic to work and I can tell you the ones I take according to the good sources I have. I am not pushing them, but they are as follows: Culturelle is a very good one and I take one a day. Also, from the health food store is Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS (by Jarrow). Both of these have been approved by my doctors as well as the pharmacologist. I take one of those, sometimes two a day. And the last one was suggested by the nutritionist whose young son was born with a lot of GI intolerances. This one you buy in 6 small bottles (liquid) and only take the six, then your done. I take 1/2 bottle a day. It's called Bio-K plus. It can be found in the refrigerator section of any good health food store. You can get information on all of the above online. They have helped me. The Bio-K plus I just started taking yesterday. I want to really get things back on track before a trip I plan on taking in a few weeks. I have never heard of the one you've been taking. Oh, I didn't start by taking all of these at once, I began with the Saccharomyces and after a couple of weeks added Culturelle, then the Bio-K after a couple of weeks. I also eat a yogurt every day.
Good luck!
Nancy

Hi groggy Naty :)
Yep, I took Zoloft for well over a year several years ago but I cannot tie my onset of IBS (now IBD) type symptoms to Zoloft. In fact, I was on it a couple times if my memory is correct. My IBS symptoms developed in force in 2007 when my wife and I both contracted food poisoning upon eating a rotisserie chicken from the local supermarket. I have not been the same since.
There seems to be so many factors in all of the treatments I have had over the years. I am so confused about what preceded what, and what precipitated what. Perhaps the zoloft predisposed me to this. Perhaps it did not. So I give up on figuring that part out.
Now go back to sleep and get some rest.

Hi Nancy,
Mary Beth recommends DF Culterelle as well. I appreciate your input on this subject.
I think I am going to finish my present bottle (just a few more) and then wander over to WalMart to see if they carry DF Culterelle.
Regards,
Rich

Well, this is all very interesting. My new primary doctor suggested Align, which I began the first week of June. I never felt that it was doing anything, but kept taking it since it agreed with me and it sounded like a good idea. I have tried others in the past that did not agree with me (Rexall brand comes to mind - it gave me instant D). I took others 20 years ago that agreed with me, but that was before my system was the nightmare that it became in the past ten or so years. I even took probiotics in the early seventies, as a teen, when my mother turned into a health nut for awhile.
I stopped the Align when I took the 5HIAA test in November (which was normal). I never noticed any changes when I stopped. Guess I should get back on it.......

I take Culturelle after I have a flare. It seems to help. I have had c. diff. so I was on probiotics for a while after that. I don't know about being on them constantly. The cynic in me thinks it is just a marketing ploy....but again that is just the cynic in me. I know this probably isn't much help, but I just wanted to relate my personal experiences with probiotics.
I hope you feel better soon--
