Subway will be offering GF items

Post by mbeezie »

Subway is piloting some GF items in the Dallas/Fort Worth/East Texas area. They have developed a GF roll made by French Meadow Bakery (dedicated GF bakery). I don't have the details on all of the ingredients. They also have a GF Brownie. Supposedly they will have a list of items that are GF.

Considering there is a Subway on nearly every corner (>33,000 stores worldwide), this could be a great option, especially when travelling.

That is great news, I just hope we can trust the end products as there stores can be small with all the products very close to each other. If it works out that will be a great option when traveling.

I suppose the interesting thing here is why a large chain store like this investing in the 'celiac' market which by the admission of most of the large food businesses is a very small market. That is unless like we suspect its a lot bigger than is being recognized.

WAHOOOOOO!!

GF is indeed becoming mainstream. I have ordered salads from Subway, and they have always been so acommodating when I ask them to change gloves after handling all of that bread before making my salad. Good for them!

Thanks for sharing, Mary Beth.

Joe,
The gluten-free market is experiencing huge growth with global sales expected to reach more than $4.3 billion within the next five years, according to recent Datamonitor analysis. The U.S. market is expected to grow by more than $500 million by 2014, which would make the United States 53 percent of the global market.
While some people think GF is a fad that will go out of fashion like Atkins, I disagree. Doctors and dietitians are slowing recognizing the need for GF in a wide range of patients. If it is true that a GF diet could benefit nearly everyone with an AI (and I think that could be true), that's a heck of alot of people. I envison someday we will test American children for celiac before they enter public school, just like they do in Italy. As we know celiac is the tip of the gluten iceberg and it is estimated that 15% of the population is gluten sensitive.

I am hopeful that we will continue to see many more products and offerings at restaurants.

I had a gluten free pizza at a restaurant that I really enjoyed. I called the manager the next day to find out the brand as I was told they'd ordered them.
It was made by French Meadow Bakery (headquartered in Minnesota). This could be good!

That would be absolutely great and here's hoping the meats on the hoagie (sub) are GF too. Shame it took actors and Hollywood types to made GF a fad but it did get us recognized. Why couldn't it just have been a response to us? Well, I'll take it any way I can get it.

Love, Maggie

I found a little more information in a newsletter from glutenfree.com
The gluten-free items will be prepackaged and individually wrapped. "Sandwich Artists" in those two markets will be trained on how to cut the roll with a pre-wrapped, single-use knife.

Also, to further avoid cross-contamination, that same "Sandwich Artist" will prepare the order from beginning to end, ensuring a 100-percent gluten-free meal.

Subway already offers items and information for allergen-sensitive customers, and includes a comprehensive chart on its website outlining ideal options for those who are gluten free. But cross-contamination is still a concern.
The items prepared by their so-called "Sandwich Artists" appear to be the safest way to go.

Hi All,

In related news from yesterday, a company (I think it was Hardy) now makes pre-packaged GF crab cakes. This is big news in my area, the Crabcake Capitol of the country!

Rich,

Yep, there's always something that they throw in the mix to mess us up.

What's your experience with Outback Steakhouse? I used to eat burgers there, but I'm off beef and chicken now, so I haven't been there for awhile. DD wants to eat there when we visit her. I see they offer lamb and pork chops. Do they have GF, SF, DF rice? Can I ask for a special plate of it? I've asked for DF broccoli there before.

Gloria,

I have good luck at Outback and I ask for GF, DF, and SF meal options. I normally get the Victoria's filet and tell them to not saute it or baste it or season it. Just cook it well done. Then I get a sweet potato and mixed vegetables (steamed). I stay away from the rice at outback. I am not sure if it is safe. But I will ask when I am on the road this week.

All in all, I do feel safe there.

Rich
