Back home, with pneumonia

I got pneumonia once again while visiting DD in Utah during the winter. You may recall that I got it last year at Christmas when I visited her.

She has two German shepherds which live in the house. I'm beginning to wonder if there's a relationship between my getting pneumonia and visiting her with her indoor dogs in the winter. Spring and summer visits don't seem to be a problem.

Another reason I'm wondering is because I got asthma and subsequently my first pneumonia the year I brought my mother's cat to my house when my mother went to a nursing home. My brother, who has asthma, noticed the relationship. We had a beagle at the time, but the beagle never seemed to bother me. (She bothered the cat a great deal, though. :smile: )

This is the fourth time I've had pneumonia. I had the pneumonia vaccine after I got double pneumonia five years ago, but the doctor I saw yesterday said it was only protective against the most virulent strain of pneumonia.

Should I avoid staying at DD's house in the winter from now on?

Oh, and the antibiotic I'm taking is Doxycycline Hyclate 100 mg. I had explosive D today before I began taking it. I think it was due to Tylenol, since that's the only change I made in my diet and medications the last couple of days. We'll see if I react to this antibiotic.

Very sorry to hear about your pneumonia and the D today. I hope you recover from both quickly.

Do you know if your vitamin and mineral levels are at optimum?

If I were in your shoes, I'd have to give that some serious thought, because pneumonia is no fun, and not to be taken lightly, of course. Indoor pets, and allergies are not a good combination, especially during the winter.

That's a heck of a note about the Tylenol. I, too, hope that the Doxycycline doesn't cause a similar reaction.

Please take care of yourself, so that you'll be back in good health ASAP.

Well, that's no fun. I agree with Tex about maybe curtailing winter visits. Hope you feel better ASAP and that the gut behaves.

Hi Gloria,

So sorry to hear you got sick. I'm also reactive to Tylenol, and have been for years. Hope the antibiotics don't cause any further MC problems, as you probably don't have much choice about taking them. I have to agree with the others here that going to Utah in the winter when the dogs are inside may not be a good idea.

You'll be in my thoughts, and I hope you have a speedy recovery. :pulsinghearts: :bigbighug:

so sorry to hear that you are poorly.

the coincidence of winter at DD's and pneumonia is not something you could ignore. maybe there is another reason other than the dogs, regardless there is a connection there somewhere

Hope the explosive D does not continue and that you can rest and get better

Hi Gloria one thought is the altitude,depending on where in Utah you could be up high enough to cause a little edema in your lungs I used tomlive at 10000 feet in Colorado and we found that a couple of relatives had issues with edema which is fluid build up in the lungs. If you couple that with the animals and any potential allergens that could be a risk factor for pneumonia

Joe, you may have a point with the altitude. DD lives in the valley, but still Salt Lake altitude is over 4,000 feet, and Chicago is only 500 feet. Couple that with the smog in the valley and the dogs, and I'm in an unfriendly atmosphere.

Only one BM today, and it was firmed up. I hope it continues. I'm feeling a little better. I think I caught this early this time. I'm able to recognize the symptoms by now.
