Feta cheese?

Post by TooManyHats »

Can those of you who are dairy-free eat Feta cheese since it's made of goat's milk?

No. The proteins and sugars are too close, so it has the same affect.

I can not eat cows milk. Not necessarily because of the sugar, lactose, but absolutely the protein, casein.

As I understand it from talking to several salt of the earth, back to the land goat farmers that produce goats milk cheese and milk and sell it at my nearby farmers market . Goats milk still contains milk sugar and milk protein. In some what smaller amounts and maybe called by another name than cows milk sugar and protein but still their. And from my experience the same results.

I bought a little piece of cheese years ago and reveled in every bight and then paid the porcelain god for a few days. No doubt that I react to the sugar and protein in both cow’s milk and goat’s milk.

I think it depends on how dairy intolerant you are. An experiment early in recovery can take weeks to get over. So be careful not to over do it. .

With twenty twenty hindsight I am very circumspect with experimenting with things on the edge of what I know is right all these years later.

Love

Matthew

P.S. Years ago I quit thinking restrictions and started thinking possibilities. It results in some fantastic meals.

So I assume that lactaid doesn't help either? I used to be able to use that, but haven't tried since my diagnosis.

Lactaid is for the lactose sugar but will not do anything with the casein protein. I cannot eat soft cheeses (feta, chevre, cream cheese) because of the lactose. However, I can eat romano, parmesan, and cheddar that is made with cultured milk. Also, dry curd cottage cheese is fine. It's the creamed that has lactose. Swiss cheese is also fine, except I don't like it. If it is only lactose, the rule of thumb seems to be that any cheese (or other dairy product) made with cultured milk that has zero carbohydrates is fine.

Also, there is the chance that down the road, lactose will be okay to eat again. Casein is another matter entirely, unfortunately.

Nope, I react to goat cheese as well as cow's milk cheese.

Hugs,

Polly

I don't react as badly to goat's milk cheeses, but I still react. They were my favorite
