MC Matrix
Discussions within a couple of the threads recently have me pondering. Why isn’t there more research done or published articles
My take is because of the intricacy and complexity which is the ‘MC matrix’
MC Matrix meaning:
a) what triggers the situation to go from niggling symptoms to full blown chronic symptoms;
b) the symptoms that occur (and which ones are intense and which ones are mild)
c) the range and timings of reactions to triggers (eg polly had medical proof that she had healed and then had a flare post MRT testing some of the possible triggers became evident)
d) whether the triggers are medicine related, food related or stress related
e) and of course the varied management techniques to minimise symptoms and attain wellness there is no one guaranteed solution and thinking about the discussions on this site, I don’t think there is two people that have achieved reasonable control the exact same way, (ie same dosages, same eating plan, same lifestyle)
f) age of patient
g) other health conditions and treatments relating to those conditions
maybe this is why
a) there is not much published research re MC because of the myriad of symptoms and triggers etc as perthe dot points above and
b) why people like Dr Fine have had issues getting results published as the findings may not work for all MC suffers and
c) even when you do make it through the maze of possiblities to attain management of symptoms and wellness does take considerable time.

Gabes,
Good observations and summary of the problem with treating MC and, as you point out, research. My GI told me that what worked for me may not work for everyone and he didn't want to tell people to use a method that wasn't fairly foolproof (not his exact words). Basically, he is looking for the published article.
Dietary treatment for MC is far from standardized and probably never will be. That's the reason that Entocort is so widely prescribed. It has a high probability of success and few complaints.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Gabes,
EXCELLENT comments! Can we talk you into going into MC research? I am only half-kidding.
You have hit upon many of the variables that will be critical to getting a handle on MC. You are so correct in pointing out these variables. In general, the diseases that are still not understood or "solved" are those that are "multifactorial" in origin......i..e. those with genetic, environmental, mind-body, and who knows what other factors all rolled into one.
Love,
Polly

everyone in this family is doing MC research.......
we try things, we track observations, we discuss anomolies, we document the good and bad reactions.
Especially those of you that are the PP Old times - we should create an PHD in MC Management !!!
Or start a circus with our MC monkey training skills!!

I agree. In order to carry out valid scientific research, one must be able to define/remove/control all the variables involved, and with MC, that's virtually impossible.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
