Question about coconut milk

Post by TooManyHats »

I see lots of products that are made from coconut milk. I keep thinking about the movie "Castaway". Didn't Tom Hanks have D from too much coconut milk? I wonder if this is good for someone who's main problem is D?

I can only say, that coconut milk contains a lot of fiber - this is why i cannot drink it, as it gives me a lot of pain.

Hi Arlene,

Don't remember that about the movie, but if you try it, be sure to get PURE coconut milk. Most have guar gum added, which is made from a legume. Many of us can't tolerate legumes.

Arlene,

That is what I recalled about too much coconut Milk! Tom Hanks had a serious case of D from it.

But I have found that in moderation, it is fine for me. Plus it has needed calories to help me keep my weight stable (still haven't gained any but I am good with holding where I am currently).

Hope this helps.

Arlene,

I find that flaked coconut helps control my D. I have read that coconut milk is used in Polynesia as a remedy for D. I wouldn't go too much by a movie, but it is true that other people on this forum have not found coconut products as helpful as I have. So you have evidence both ways--that sounds like MC! Everybody's experience is different. You'll probably have to try it cautiously to see what your reaction is.

I drink SoDelicious Cocnut Milk every day. My 6 yr old son is ADDICTED to it - he likes it more than juice! I'm still having D, but I don't feel any association between the coconut milk and the D. There's been discussions here about the benefits of the fatty acids in coconut milk for healing the GI tract. I also saute with coconut oil and use it as a moisturizer and lip balm from time to time. It's great for sensitive skin. I also enjoy macaroons. I am a little concerned about the Gellan gum and guar gum in the processed milk, but I think it beats carrageenan found in some almond milks. I'm going to try making my own with canned coconut milk, water, vanilla, a little sweetener, and calcium powder.

But isn't the trick finding a canned coconut milk without the guar gum? I understand that Trader Joe's light coconut milk used to be free of it, but has recently started putting it in. If anyone here knows of brand that doesn't have that in it, would you please tell me? Thanks!

Goya brand canned coconut milk does not list guar gum as an ingredient. It has coconut milk, water, and potassium metabisulfite. It says on the front "No gums, thickeners or stabilizers added."
