My Doctor's Visit

Post by TooManyHats »

I saw a new doctor yesterday. He's a family practitioner with a specialty in alternative medicine. I'm still processing it all. Overall, I thought he was a good doctor. He took a good medical history (very important IMO). He asked lots of questions about my bout with pericarditis as a child. He wondered whether that could have been autoimmune in nature, which is something I haven't heard before. He told me I was a fascinating case--and added that was something you probably never want to hear a doctor say because that means you are unusual. He took blood work to check my vitamin D levels and check my thyroid. He asked what else I wanted checked and I said I wanted my pancreas checked after what I've read here. He ordered that too. We discussed the medication that my GI had given me and his opinion was that if nothing else was helping at some point, I'd have to consider taking it--but if diet is helping me, it's not necessary at this time. I asked for and got a prescription for the generic form of Questran as an insurance policy just in case Immodium isn't helping anymore. I'm still pretty nervous about having another flare as I'm diligently searching for a full time job. He asked me about what supplements I'm taking and said I had gotten off to a good start. When I told him about my g/f, d/f and s/f diet, he thought it was a good idea. He then recommended I take 3 of 4 things I've never heard of. I stood at the desk before leaving to go home and read all the ingredients. In the end, I decided not to buy any of them until I had researched all them with my same slightly anal (pun intended) tendencies. I may send PMs to a couple of people to ask what they think. I'm so afraid to put anything into my mouth that isn't PP approved! I'm not sure I'd use this doc for respiratory infections or the like, but I like his approach so far. I reserve the right to change my mind though. At least he understands what gluten intolerance is, which is more than I can say for either my GI or my Primary Physician.

Well, he certainly sounds promising, so far.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Toomanyhats

I think he sounds like one who listens. Always a sign of intelligence. Hope it continues.

Arlene, great news about the new doctor!!

And too funny... I am seriously OCD (alphabetical order CDO, lol) and call myself anal often. It really does give new meaning to the term, doesn't it?
