Went Shopping... Now I'm Depressed

Post by MBombardier »

I am so tired of the muscle and joint pain that has plagued me and even grown worse since that flare I had a few weeks ago. After Arlene noticed soy in her supplement, it seems that I am finding soy everywhere, even in Tootsie Roll pops. What the heck?? But not in 100% cacao chocolate. Oh joy... I dislike dark chocolate heartily.

And did you know there is barley in butterscotch chips?? Not in the Guittard brand, though.

I'm really not fixated on sweets, it's just that I'd like a sweet treat once in a while because most everything I eat is really boring.

Now I think I'll go see if I react to the gluten-free Rice Chex I just bought... I'll put coconut milk on them...

Awwww, Marliss... I'm sorry to hear you so down. I agree, food shopping can be a really frustrating, depressing experience. How did you fare on the GF Rice Chex? I remember when I tried them last summer before I was on Entocort, I really reacted to them ( and coconut milk), so I hope you are ok. I use no-name brand puffed rice and add some sunflower seeds and dried cranberries to it. It tastes just like the stuff I bought at the health food store for $7.00 for a tiny pouch , and for the same price I can make a mountain of it.

hmm trying to think of a safe sweet treat for you.... have you ever tried banana chips? I am not soy intolerant after all and when it comes to sweet things that's a godsend. But what works for me will not for you. i'll keep trying to think of something..
Well, there's always bliss balls! I make them 30 at a time and have two every night after dinner.... Hope you are feeling better soon.

Marliss,

When I noticed soy in Lifesavers, I realized that I couldn't eat any candy that I haven't made. I used to buy Enjoy Life chocolate chips, melted them, poured the liquid into Wilton candy molds, and refrigerated them.

Once they were solid, I'd pop them out and put them in a plastic bag in the fridg. When I wanted a quick sweet snack, I'd eat a couple.

I couldn't eat the Guittard brand. I don't remember why, but they probably had soy lethicin in them.

The PepOmint lifesavers don't list soy on the label. Geez, I hope I'm ok with those. They're made in Canada, so wouldn't they HAVE to list it? Isn't that their law?

yes, I believe we have similar laws in Canada to the US about that they must list potential allergins (dairy, wheat, soy.)

Marliss, can you eat nuts? I couldn't for awhile, but can now. During Christmas when everyone was eating all the good stuff, I melted some Enjoy chocolate chips (gf, df, sf) and mixed in a can of deluxe mixed nuts and dropped them on wax paper until they hardened or put them in the fridge. It was easy and I felt like I was eating something decadent. I didn't feel deprived at all when it came to candy.

Oh Marliss,

How I feel your pain. My grocery cart looks ridiculous now. It's like soda water, lactose free milk, bananas, gluten free stuff, and cat food. I really miss the days when I was a "foodie" and a "wine geek". That is why I was so excited when I found those blueberry muffins the other day. I miss cereal more than I can say, but am now terrified to even go there....

Love,

Mags

Thanks, ladies, I am feeling better today! I actually didn't have the rice chex and coconut milk until this morning. They were yummy! But I just realized I won't know how I reacted to them because my daughter made me some chocolate chip cookies (soy) and I chewed on two pieces of gum (soy) during worldview class a little while ago to stay awake.

It's starting to get funny in a strange sort of way. Yes, I've been told I have a weird sense of humor.

The banana chips are an excellent idea! I looked at them in the store yesterday, and they didn't have anything but banana in them. I didn't get them because I was a little worried about the fiber, but I realize that really shouldn't be a concern.

I'm going to have to find those Enjoy Life chocolate chips. My daughter is a major baker, and we try to make something for all the food-intolerant people at our shared meal at church on Sundays.

Thanks again! I love the understanding here...

Glad you are feeling better, Marlis.

Unfortunately you are correct about some form of soy being used in almost all processed foods. It's more prevelant than gluten in my opinion. I don't like dark chocolate either so I understand your problem. I'm able to give up sweets for the most part but I often crave salty snacks.

Good luck

Marliss, did you see the weekly recipe from Living Without? I hope this link comes through because I subscribe to the magazine and think that's why I get these each week.

http://www.livingwithout.com/recipes/ch ... :&st=email

I actually use a shortcut to make these. I buy the Jennies Coconut Macaroons (gf, df, sf, they do have egg white in them, but I've never reacted to it. They're also in my local grocery store in addition to health food stores) melt Enjoy chocolate chips, dip them in and let them set up. They are yummy, but I think I'm going to try this recipe for Valentine's day.
Have a good day, JoAnn

Marliss,

i just posted the other day, that eating Rice chex and coconut milk made me deathly ill the next day....

I hope you don't have the same reaction! It seems there is an ingredient in Coconut milk called Guar Gum that is Badddd. I am told best to try almond milk.

Take care,
karen

Yes, Karen, that's why I said it. It was kind of like kids say, "Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I'm going to eat some worms." I don't know if it was the Rice Chex or the soy in the choco chips of the cookies my dd16 made me, but something didn't sit well the next morning.

Thanks, JoAnn! I get the e-mails from Living Without now, thanks to your recommendation. I also am waiting for Analiese Roberts' cookbooks, thanks to your recommendation. She has the same breadmaker I do, and since my husband has agreed to our home being gluten-free now (except for him) I am looking forward to consistently making decent bread that my girls will eat.

These sound good. I don't have a bread machine, but if I did these look pretty good.

Yes, those are excellent mixes. Back when I still ate bread, they were my favorite. I didn't have a bread machine either, (and still don't, for that matter).

With those mixes, you can make bread that is light and fluffy, moist, and excellent for sandwiches. IOW, you can slice it and make a sandwich, and eat it, without having to toast it to make it hold together, and without having to worry about it disintegrating into a pile of crumbs on the floor.
