IBS vs LC vs IBD vs FBD

Post by Zizzle »

Some of us have been talking about our belief that IBS doesn't really exist and is a garbage can term for undiagnosed GI symptoms. I just stumbled across a bunch of research abstracts and opinions from 2005 predecting that IBS with inflammation would SOON be known as LC. If this was apparent in 2005, why aren't we any closer to accepting these truths in 2011??

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16045602

They also tie gluten sensitivity to Functional Bowel Disorders and Post-Infectious IBS (aka LC)

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19455131

Honestly, I predict that in a few years LC and CC will be classified as sub-types of IBS!!!

Screw IBS! It's just a smokescreen preventing everyone from reaching the truth.

Zizzle--

I certainly agree with you, as does the rest of my family. Both my mom and my stepmom were diagnosed with IBS. My stepmom ended up having celiac, and my mom now agrees she probably has MC. She is following a GF, SF, LF (lactose-free) diet, and finds when she deviates from this she has symptoms. The problem is the doctors, and MC is not the only disease they treat (or don't) like this.

They are so reluctant to think outside of the box. My grandmother suffered from D for many years until she was miraculously cured--by our psychiatrist. It was simply a matter of controlling her fiber intake and putting her on a lactose-free diet. She took Cholestyramine until her gut could heal, and is now D and med free. He also took her off the heavy tranquilizers that they had been using to control her bipolar and put her on a light regiment of a mood stabilizer and a small dose of Zyprexa and this wonderful woman came back to us.

I mention this because bipolar is another disease that docs often 1. misdiagnose 2. treat with the wrong meds.

This results in years of pain and suffering for the patient and their family. I know this from personal experience, as several members of my family are bipolar. Another member was misdiagnosed with bipolar when she actually had borderline personality disorder and is continuing to wreak havoc today.

Doctors really need to get with the program and quit thinking that they are God, just because they have an M.D. or a D.O. I exclude, of course, the wonderful people on this board, but include my BIL.

Sorry for the rant, but it touched a chord in me,

Dear Zizzle

Thanks for posting....
Will inflammation emerge as a common underlying factor in the pathogenesis of IBS? The answer to these and many questions must await further study of this fascinating area
"fascinating area"?? what a cold, dispassionate phrase......there are millions and millions of real people whose lives are being destroyed on a daily basis. It is not "fascinating", it is URGENT!

Maybe soon the medical industry will agree that, so called, "IBS" is real inflammation; that it is not just a nuisance, that it has numerous, serious complications and is not just "in peoples heads" but...... in thier GI systems......that none of it is a 'Syndrome', but it is ALL IBD with many forms and ways of presenting.

WAKE UP, WAKE UP and get on with those "further studies"...... people are suffering out here.

Maybe one day, in a more enlightened world, the powers that be will admit that they were as mistaken about bread and animal's milk being healthy foods for humans.

Rant over :thatsit: best ant

The wheels of progress turn so slowly in the medical world, that changes that would require a few years in the business world, usually take a few decades, (or so), in the medical world. Once those in positions of authority, (with regards to policies), take a position, they are extremely reluctant to make changes that might bring into question the original accuracy of the concept. Butt-covering is the name of the game.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

These researchers should log onto PP and do some REAL research. All the data has been compiled in a neat, tidy little package for them. I would be happy to take part in some research.
