Very interesting. They are getting closer and closer to figuring this out.
"Gluten sensitivity is a totally different animal than celiac disease, because it doesn't involve the autoimmune response and it doesn't have the same long-term consequences," Fasano noted
Red text my emphasis.

Dr. Fasano still doesn't seem to get it. He's close, but no cigars.

Hmmmmmmm. I have to agree with Gloria - Fasano doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. In addition to what Gloria highlighted in red, the rest of that sentence, ("it doesn't have the same long-term consequences," Fasano noted), is also incorrect. Our experience with MC clearly contradicts his claim. For us, it doesn't necessarily cause villus atrophy, but it certainly causes long-term damage to the gut, and the end result is exactly the same - if we are to stop the symptoms, we have to remove all traces of gluten from our diet. If it quacks like a duck!

What really makes me wonder if he knows what he's doing, though, is the following quote, also from that article:
"What's really intriguing, I think, is the role of retinoic acid, which we've always thought helped to prevent the immune response rather than make it worse. It's a most provocative finding," Fasano said.
When it turns out that something has the opposite effect of what you thought, you're clearly lost. It's going to be difficult for me to put much trust into anything that he says, after reading that. Damn! That's pathetic.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I guess we're the self-diagnosing hypochondriacs he refers to. Geez.
