Why servers ask those annoying questions in restaurants!!!

Post by Mags »

Some time ago, someone posted about an obnoxious server who kept asking questions about their food intolerances. I have been meaning to address this..

THIS IS THE SERVER YOU WANT!!!

I spent many years in the restaurant business, and believe me, they are asking this for your own safety. Many people claim that they are allergic to onions, for instance, and it is very important to find out if this is true. If they just don't like onions, it's one thing, but if they are allergic, it is quite another.

If your server is persistent, it is because they want to make sure your food is prepared correctly. If you are GSD intolerant, it is necessary to prepare your food in a separate sautee pan, instead of on the grill, or the flat top. It is also necessary to use a new cutting board, change gloves, use separate knives, etc.

They then have to find the one cook in the kitchen who will listen to them. People who are not in the business rarely know how contentious it can be when the front of the house (floor staff) try to tell the back of the house (kitchen staff) how to cook something. The kitchen prides themselves on making the same dishes, exactly the same way, every single time. THEY DO NOT LIKE SPECIAL ORDERS. Unless it is a restaurant that has a gluten-free menu, please be patient with your server.

They really do have your best interests at heart.

Love,
