pregnancy

Post by jmayk8 »

I am nearing my late 20's and I have always thought that having a baby probably wasn't for me. But I guess things change when you get older (mom's are always right!) Anyways, I was wondering how safe it would be for me and baby while having Celiac and LC?
Thanks! Happy Valentine's Day!!

I don't know how bad your symptoms are, but I would guess your LC will improve while pregnant. Pregnancy dampens your immune system so you won't reject the foreign body growing inside you. My "IBS" at the time improved dramatically while pregnant. Plus pregnancy slows down digestion and can cause constipation, so maybe you'll be able to skip the constipation part. Many people with autoimmune diseases do much better while pregnant. Assuming you are doing well avoiding your food sensitivities and getting proper nutrients, you should be fine. HOWEVER, you may experience a significant flare in the post-partum period when your immune system comes roaring back and your hormones are all over the place. That's when all my autoimmune issues became apparent.

I had my third baby 2 years after being diagnosed with MC. I started out the pregnancy on Asacol as well as on a gluten free diet. About 3 months in I was able to ditch the Asacol for good and I've never looked back (that was in 2002!). My MC has been so much better after the pregnancy. My drs were all very supportive - I was referred to a dietitian to make sure my nutritional needs were being met. I hope you have a positive experience, as well, should you choose to pursue motherhood

My DD had "IBS" before she became pregnant, but since she's had her two daughters, she doesn't have any problems.
