Fish Oil Supplements?

Post by Coach Polly »

I have been lurking on this site for some time but have decided to join in hopes of enlightenment and support. After three years of chronic D I have recently been officially diagnosed with Lymphocytic Colitis. I am currently taking 6 mg of Entocort daily (my insurance would not pay for 9 mg??) and following the Paleo diet as much as I can. My doctor also has me on VSL-3 and digestive enzymes. He also wants me to take 13-14 grams of fish oil a day. That seems like a lot to me and I can't comprehend drinking oil of any kind being helpful when I'm already dealing with D! I have these memories of my grandmother eating vaseline by the spoonful when she wasn't "regular" LOL!!

I haven't seen any information on this site about fish oil--although I'm sure it's there! Any advice?

Hi Coach,

Welcome to the group. I'm certainly no authority on fish oil, but I take a 1.2 gram capsule daily, plus a 1.2 gram capsule of flax seed oil, and I would be afraid to take more. Some members of this group have reported problems with diarrhea from doses as low as this. I would suspect that 13 to 14 grams per day would virtually guarantee diarrhea, but I could be wrong, of course.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Coach Polly--

I would double check with your doc on that dosage. I have never, ever heard of a dosage anywhere near that high for any condition, even for bipolar disorder in Germany where they use it in IV therapy. It just sounds way off to me. Two 1000mg capsules is about max dosage normally.

Welcome Coach Polly.

I am in agreement with Tex and Mags that it seems like an extremely high dosage. The big D to me would be the end result of taking that much - no pun intended.

Stick around and I am sure you will find many interesting articles to read and feel free to ask away with your questions. That is why we are here.

Welcome Coach Polly,
My nutritionist advised me not to take more than 1 softgel a day of fish oil becuase of my easy bruising tendency. Fish oil thins your blood. You should also be careful is you are taking any other blood thinning meds or aspirin.

Welcome Coach Polly ( wow, two Polly's now!)

Also just a caution, for some of us, digestive enzymes have just made the D. way worse ( that was my experience), though a few have certain kinds that they can take and others they cannot. No doubt that we need them but it seems just can't tolerate them, maybe because of other ingredients in the products.(?) Recently someone posted that they have had good luck with a product called Scdophilus, which is supposed to be dairy and gluten free.

Anyhow, welcome aboard , and may you find your way to health soon.

Welcome to our site Coach Polly,

I have higher than normal cholesterol and see a cardiologist because I can't take statins. She wanted me on 3 grams (3,000) of fish oil. I can't tolerate more than 2. I can even smell it in my stools if I take more than 2. I would agree with the others that you check with your Dr.

Also, ask all the questions you want. All of us have somewhat different experiences and are willing to share them.

Welcome Coach Polly
I take a prescription fish oil called Lovaza. It's concentrated and you take far less and it's easier on the gut. You can check out their website. It is pricey, but my insurance picks up a good chunk of it and I don't pay any more than I would for a high quality otc fish oil. I'm sensitive to soy and it does list soy as an ingredient, but I have never reacted to it-maybe it's a small amount that doesn't affect me. If your insurance covers this and your dr prescribes it, this might be an option for you to try.

Fish Oil Supplements?

Post by Coach Polly »

Thanks everybody for the info. I am double-checking with my doc about that dosage. There was a huge red flag when I went to buy the fish oil and looked at the recommended dosages on most of them!! I'm sure I will have many more questions in the future. I'm still weeding through old posts for info while I wait on my sensitivity tests to come back. There is so much great information on this board!!!

I've been taking Carlson's fish oil http://www.carlsonlabs.com/p-70-very-fi ... lavor.aspx for quite a while. It's in liquid form and slightly lemony tasting (flavored). It's very mild, hardly any fish taste and I also don't burp it up as I have with other ones I've tried. One thing I've noticed lately is I haven't been bruising much after being an easy bruiser all my life. I could carry a box and end up with bruises on my stomach. I'm wondering if it's because I may be absorbing nutrients better since going gluten free???

I agree with Deb that if you are going liquid, Carlson's is the one to do.
