help??
hi there...it's me again...wondering if someone could shed a little light on this for me....ok....brief summary, was on prednisone for 15 days back in november, then started entocort...it did help some in dec. but was not as helpful in jan (although it was better than before taking it) just talked to dr. 2 weeks ago...wanted me to add asacol to the entocort...it seems to help a little as well....i have been going from 1-4 times a day....my question is i went only 1 time yesterday (it was "ok") and went as soon as i got up this a.m. and it was about the same (kind of like a soft pile but not quite)....yesterday i ate gluten free pancakes with natural syrup and decaf green tea, lunch was gf pasta with chicken and dinner was lettuce wraps. for a snack i had a gf cookie and a handful of chocolate chex.....(I know some people have an issue with chex but i eat them often and each day i eat them the bathroom issues are different )....so with that in mind, can anyone tell me why my stool would be like that?? thanks!

Morning,
Cannot understand why your doctor would give you Asacol in addition to Entocort. Actually, Asacol never did a thing for me. So far as what you ate, I think the lettuce wraps could possibly be a problem but not sure what they contained. Didn't even know they made chocoate Chex. Also, I cannot do any kind of tea as it goes right through me.
I am sure everyone else will probably be a lot more helpful than I have been.
Love, Maggie

I would suspect the Chex. Just because your stool consistency is different on a daily basis is not evidence that something you are eating every day is not a problem. I would cut them out for a couple of weeks, to see what happens.
I agree with Maggie - taking Asacol in addition to Entocort is like sticking a band aid on a cast that's holding a broken arm in place.
Good luck with tracking down the problem.

Hi Willabec;
Along with the two things the others mentioned, a little flag goes up for me about the gf pancakes. If you aren't getting extreme improvement from the entocort, it is possible that you have other food intolerances besides wheat (such as eggs, corn, tapioca, sorghum, casein.) Or maybe you have already tested for those things and are sure you are not... But if you don't know for sure, I would stay away from any gf mixes, dairy and eggs for awhile ( just stick to basics like meat, rice, well -cooked mild veggies like carrots) and see if you see any improvement. The fact that you have CD and have been gf for a while, and still developed MC, sure suggests to me that you may have other intolerances.

Along with all the other "usual suspects" the others have mentioned, I thought I would mention the Asacol. I was put on Asacol as the first treatment for my mc, and I grew sicker and sicker over time from it. I also don't understand why your dr would prescribe it with the entocort. Entocort was the drug that helped me over time. In the beginning, my gi had plans to shift me to Asacol after a few months on entocort, but I had to remind him about how sick it had made me. He finally just wrote me a prescription for entocort for a years worth and left me to my own devices. I have since relied on my pcp for entocort. Although I don't need it now, she believes I should always have it on hand in case of a flare. She also agrees with the gluten connection and other food sensitivities which put her miles ahead of the gi dr.

i don't know why dr. is adding asacol but some research i did today said that it could be added in addition to entocort to help with remission??however the dosage he told me to take seems different that what i have found to be recommended???
joe- there seems to be not too much fiber in the chex 3/4 cup without milk contains less than 1 gram of fiber. not sure about the lettuce wraps???
can someone tell me why the urgency with this disease and why that comes and goes...does that too have something to do with diet? i mean today all three times i went to the bathroom i was fine and then within seconds i had to go....was talking to a co-worker, had a strange feeling in stomach and then i said, yup i will be going to the bathroom...same as in my ride home...was fine until i walked into the house!!

Willabec,
You sound just like me. The urgency comes and goes based on what offensive things I've eaten, and I seem to be pushing the envelope on food lately. I just moved to a temporary house and I'm totally stressed at work, so being 100% careful about food is tough right now. I seem to react to many GF/DF cookies, but I haven't figured out to which ingredients. I've been munching on rice chex this week and flaring, but that's due to restaurant food over the weekend and GF hungarian goolash I made last night containing rotelle tomatoes with spicy green chilies. Ouch. When I know I'm eating 100% safe, the urgency subsides considerably. When I'm flaring the urgency hits me first hing in the AM, when standing around at work, and the moment I get home. It's a mircale I haven't had an accident in my car.

Willabec,
It sounds to me like you are eating as you've always eaten, with the exception of substituting GF products for those with gluten.
In my experience and others on the board, seldom is gluten the only problem we have to deal with. We have an inflammed gut, which is easily irritated by other foods, such as high-fiber foods, lettuce, nuts, brown rice, etc. In addition, we usually are intolerant to other foods, most commonly casein (dairy) and soy.
The best way to remove all of these intolerances/irritants from your diet is to eat very plain meats, well-cooked vegetables, soft fruits, such as banana and applesauce, and white rice, cooked to a mushy consistency. Once your gut heals and you are having normal BMs for quite a while, you can begin to experiment with other riskier foods.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Willabec,
I agree with Gloria. I started on the GF diet only. Seemed a little better, then got worse. As Tex explained, other sensitivities become more prominent. So out went the dairy (caisen), soy, etc.
Now, after several long months, I feel more stable than I have in years. Still not perfect but what is perfect?
