Cornstarch On Medical Examination Gloves - Unexpected Issues

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Could this be one of the reasons why so many people are so prone to inflammation, and why so many of us have unexplained adhesions?
Powders on nonlatex gloves have also been the subject of adverse event reports more recently, the FDA indicated, citing more than 30 studies. These include impaired wound healing, inflammation, granulomas, and adhesions in patients.

Many of you probably remember me posting about this, last spring. I had abdominal surgery 5 years ago, and again, about a year ago. The second time, my intestines were loaded with adhesions, and my mesentery was a mess. I immediately assumed that this was due to something that happened during the first surgery, and I asked my surgeons, (and any other doctors who would patiently listen), how this could happen, they all insisted that adhesions are always common after surgery. Well, now we know why. :sigh:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Tex--

I really don't understand why they insist on using gloves with powder on them anyway. Medical gloves with aloe have been available for years, leave no dangerous powdery residue, and are much better for the skin health of those who must use them. It must be ignorance, or maybe a cost issue....

Gabes,

Please inform your dentist that you are intolerant to latex. I am a dental hygienist and we accomodate those intolerant to latex ( at least the ones that tell us). I use latex free and powder free all the time. The dentist uses nonpowdered latex unless a patient is intolerant. He thinks the latex are less slippery. I can't tell the difference.

Wish medical people would just go back to vigorous hand washing and ditch the gloves!

grannyh,

I know what you mean, but vigorous hand washing is not good. It can open small places on your skin where bacteria and viruses can enter. When I was in dental hygiene school we used to scrub our hands with a brush thinking we were getting our hands clean. This was before AIDS was in the picture. Then we learned that was not a good practice. Everything changed forever. We do the best we can now to make everything safe for our patients and safe for ourselves.

Pat,
I know you are right. Just so frustrating that every "advance" has it's own complications..
