Chocolate.....HELP Please!

Post by Kimberly M »

Do any of you know of any good chocolate that is GF, DF and SF? Seems like there are lots of GF options but most seem to have dairy and/or soy. I am a chocoholic and am really struggling to find something good to satisfy my cravings :???: I love peanut M&M's but they have stuff in them that aren't great for us MCer's.

Thanks so much for any suggestions!

here in Oz, i can purchase Bonvita chocolate - it is rice milk based. They have White, Milk, Dark, dark with cranberry.

it is made in europe, i buy it online there are about 4 - 5 online retailers that sell it, and i have seen it at some of the health food outlets. it is also Vegan friendly so alot of online vegan product outlets also stock it.

Kim,

You're in luck - it's nearly Passover. During Passover it's possible to purchase chocolate candy bars without soy lethicin. They must be marked "Suitable for Passover," but you can also look at the ingredients. I purchase 50 bars to last me through the year. DH is eating them this year because I'm not eating chocolate right now, but I plan on purchasing another 50 bars this year. I can always hope!

Read these threads for more information:

You can also purchase the Enjoy Life chocolate chips mentioned above. They're available at Whole Foods. I used to melt the chocolate chips and pour them into Wilton candy molds. Refrigerate them and they pop right out of the molds. When I needed a chocolate fix, which was every day, I'd grab a couple out of a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Whole Foods 365 Swiss Dark Chocolate bars and Theo bars (at Whole Foods) do not list soy or dairy ingredients.

I know about Theo bars, and even toured their plant in Seattle. They are one of the few chocolate makers who have control of the whole process from importing the cocoa beans. You have to be careful, as not all of their chocolate is dairy-free, only the dark chocolate. They run their milk chocolate and dark chocolate products on separate lines, so there is very little chance of dairy cross-contamination. I am gluten, dairy and soy-intolerant and have never had a reaction and I probably have eaten half a bar a day for the past year!

the Swiss Lindt dark chocolate is also soy free. Not always, so first read the label. Swiss (another swiss brand) is also soy free (the dark version) only I discovered they added milk fat to it...sigh...

"Suitable for Passover"
Just curious but why is soy lecithin and/or milk a no-no for passover? Did the ancients know more then modern medicine?

Trader Joe's Organic dark chocolate truffle. It's amazingly delicious and GF/DF/SF. I've also found a hot cocoa at Whole Foods and elsewhere (Can't remember the name but it's really common!). I drink it in water instead of milk, Guatemalan style. Yummy!!
Stay away from M&Ms - thay have added lactose too!

Just a warning - the Enjoy Life bars are not as good as the others but OK in a pinch. I wonder if you can order Theo bars online.

That's great news, Joan! I've been wondering if you've been able to eat chocolate again. I'll keep hoping I will again, too.

Here's an explanation I found: http://judaism.about.com/library/3_askr ... kosher.htm

It doesn't explain milk, but I'm not sure if milk is prohibited during Passover. I know that some sects are required to separate their meat and dairy days.

Yes, you can order online. In fact, you can see what allergens each type of bar contain, as seen in the link below. I just noticed that they carry a new toasted coconut chocolate bar, which I haven't see in the store here in Oregon. The cost on their web site for a bar is $4, but I often find it on sale here at Market of Choice for $2.29 (regular price $3.59) and then stock up.

There is a store locator on their site, and for Texas I see that Whole Foods Markets carry Theo. Of course they probably don't carry everything.

Oh yes, the Fennel, Fig and Almond Bar sounds a bit strange, but is really yummy!

Enjoy! Their chocolate bars are outstanding, with lots of different flavors.
